Prerequisite Work

To comply with AACSB International accreditation standards, MBA degree programs must consist of a minimum of 48 semester credits of foundation and graduate work in business administration and related areas. Most programs require a minimum of 18 credits of foundation work and a minimum of 30 credits of graduate-level work. As described above, the UMD program requires a total of 32 credits of graduate level work in management and business administration after admission. Therefore, applicants must complete a minimum of 16 credits or the equivalent of foundation or prerequisite work in related areas in addition to the 32 program credits.

As is true for graduate programs in other areas, students are expected to have completed foundation work prior to registering for and being granted graduate credit in an area. A general listing of areas and common course titles that comprise what is considered the foundation for the graduate-level work in management and business administration is presented below. As shown in the chart, the foundation areas include mathematics, statistics, and computer applications in addition to accounting, economics, and each of the functional areas of business. The number of prerequisite or foundation courses to be completed will vary depending upon previous educational experience of the applicant.

REQUIRED FOUNDATION/PREREQUISITE PREPARATION

Applicants are required to have completed formal academic work in mathematics, statistics, economics, and accounting and formal academic work or comparable industrial training in the other areas identified below as a foundation for the 32 credits of graduate-level that comprise the MBA program. Normally, all of this foundation work should be completed prior to beginning to take MBA-level courses.

Statistics (through simple regression and analysis of variance)
Computer Applications (word processing, spreadsheet, database, e-mail and Internet awareness and use)
