Advising

The Student Affairs office works collaboratively with LSBE faculty and coordinates many kinds of advising activities for students within the School and for non-LSBE students seeking a minor in business administration or accounting. LSBE Student Affairs staff members enjoy working with students and are committed to providing them with accurate, timely and friendly service.

New freshmen and new transfer students are assigned to a staff advisor from within this office and are later re-assigned to work with faculty in the discipline of their interest. This may occur when admitted to candidacy or after completion of the freshman year, whichever is most appropriate.

While not mandated, students are strongly encouraged to meet with their advisor regularly in order to establish an effective advisor-advisee relationship. Advising is more than a simple selection of classes. For example, students may learn about the role of internships or other opportunities that help prepare them for careers in business, government, or non-profit organizations, or for graduate/professional study. Faculty advisors within the student’s area of interest are best prepared to provide appropriate assistance as each seeks broader knowledge and awareness of career or graduate study options available.

Student Affairs staff provide advisement for academic and registration issues, developmental support, degree progress questions, clarification of requirements, policies and procedures and the candidacy system within LSBE. We monitor student progress in many different ways, e.g., progress toward admission to candidacy, academic standing, and graduation. Official notification to students is normally done through the UMD email account. Petitions for exceptions to LSBE requirements, policies and procedures are also handled in this office, but final decisions on campus policies are made in the Office of Financial Aid and Registrar.

Any LSBE student interested in studying abroad is encouraged to meet with staff in SBE 21. When well-planned, a study abroad experience may fit degree requirements at the same time it provides a rich educational experience. It is important to do this planning in advance and to take advantage of the advising services provided to LSBE students while they are abroad. Additionally, as the student record keepers for LSBE, a study abroad file is important to establish in the office.
