Progress Toward Degree Requirements

Student affairs staff members monitor students' progress in a variety of ways and provide feedback to students about their academic careers in LSBE. Students may find out about the status of their degree requirements at any time by scheduling an appointment with their advisor or with professional staff in SBE 21. The APAS report is an excellent advising tool and provides information about student's progress in their degree program. And, there are some key points in students' careers during which they receive formal feedback from student affairs staff:
Application for Candidacy
Students must submit an application for candidacy to SBE 21 after completing 30 credits. (Or, 45 credits, including those in progress.) Student affairs staff members monitor students' progress toward finishing the pre-candidacy requirements. Students receive information about their admission to candidacy (upper division status), or that they are making good progress, or that they are not GPA eligible for admission. If students are not GPA eligible, a meeting with their advisor or with student affairs staff is recommended. Applications are monitored each term, until the student either gains admission or changes out of the school. All notification is sent to the student's official UMD e-mail account.
Preliminary Credit Check
Students are required to submit a graduation plan at 90 credits. Graduation plans are on-line or in SBE 21. Students should examine their APAS report and other official documents and be prepared in other ways before scheduling a meeting with their faculty advisor to plan when and how remaining degree requirements will be fulfilled. The official plan, signed by the faculty advisor, is submitted to SBE 21. During the term just before the student is expected to graduate, student affairs staff members send the student a preliminary credit check. This mailed document informs the student about requirements that are still outstanding and includes instructions and forms for the pre-registration procedures for LSBE courses needed in the last term. (We do not monitor requirements for any non-LSBE majors or minors.)
Final Credit Check
During the student's term of expected graduation, a final credit check is done. This credit check is intended to ensure that the student has registered for all final classes required for the degree and that all other degree requirements are fulfilled. If the student is meeting ALL outstanding requirements, the student is notified which courses they must successfully complete in order to receive their degree. If all requirements are not in progress, the student is sent a discrepancy memo stating which requirements are still outstanding.
The degree clearance officer, in the Office of Financial Aid and Registrar, examines each student's record to make sure that all final grades were successful attempts and that there are no "Incompletes" on the record. If the student's record is complete, the degree is posted on the record. The student is sent a transcript that lists the degree posting. Diplomas are mailed out approximately four months after the degree is posted.
