technology grant proposals
LSBE Technology Grant Proposals

The Labovitz School of Business and Economics (LSBE) solicits grant proposals for technology projects from all LSBE students, faculty and staff. LSBE recognizes that our graduates need to be technologically prepared to enter the world of work. Therefore, the primary goal of LSBE in the use of student-generated technology dollars is to put LSBE on the cutting edge in the use of technology in teaching and learning as well as administration. This would include and involve, but not be limited to: classrooms, labs, offices, websites, courses, as well as the training of students, faculty, and staff. In order to accomplish this goal, proposals for technology initiatives will be invited periodically during the calendar year. Proposals should be submitted to the LSBE Technology Program Director (SBE 49). The LSBE Technology Committee will review these proposals, rank them in order of priority and present the prioritized list to the LSBE Dean. The Dean shall have final authority in determining the allocation of technology dollars based on these recommendations. Proposals for all types of technology projects are invited, however, those projects that have the greatest impact on the largest number of LSBE students will have highest priority. It is important to remember that student technology fees are providing the pool of dollars that will be available to finance technology initiative projects. Therefore, the impact on students from any technology grant proposal must be recognized and discussed within the proposal.

LSBE is looking for technology proposals that contain good, creative ideas in the IT field that will help our students become technology proficient and provide them with the tools necessary to succeed in the world of work once they graduate from UMD. Towards that goal, the following criteria should be used to differentiate the quality of proposals received in the technology area. In general:
- The more students impacted by the proposal the more acceptable it will be.
- “Hands-on” proposals will be more acceptable than those buying services from elsewhere.
- Proposals that spread technology expenditures over time will be more acceptable than those having high up front expenditure needs.
- Proposals that have high on-going service and/or support expenditures for the life cycle of the project will be more acceptable than those that do not.
- Proposals that have a clear budget presentation will be more acceptable than those that do not.
- Proposals that are complete and persuasive (high overall quality) will be more acceptable than those that are not.
- Proposals that address an immediate need in LSBE will be more acceptable than those that do not.
- Proposals that are consistent with what LSBE is trying to achieve in the area of technology will be more acceptable than those that do not.
- Proposals that do not have a negative impact on the IT infrastructure of UMD (e.g. – ITSS) will be more acceptable than those that do.
- Proposals submitted by individuals with a positive track record in the use of past technology funds will be more acceptable than those submitted by individuals whose track record is not positive.
- Proposals that contain a strong, effective assessment component will be more acceptable than those that do not (assessment component – a plan in the proposal that attempts to measure if the project accomplished what the proposal indicated it would).
- Proposals that seek to purchase faculty and staff PC’s, Mac’s, or laptops will not be acceptable.
- Proposals that seek faculty summer salary will not be acceptable.
