Entrance Requirements and Procedures

An undergraduate degree in mathematics, statistics (or a related field, such as computer science), or its foreign equivalent is the normal prerequisite to admission. However, a student with a degree in any major and with a substantial background in mathematics or statistics is encouraged to apply. An applicant who lacks certain lower-level prerequisites for graduate level courses may make up these deficiencies while enrolled in the program. Because the program involves broad and often interdisciplinary programs of study with a wide variety of emphases, the strength of an applicant's general background will play an important role in the admissions process.

To obtain admissions material please click here, or contact the Graduate School through grad@d.umn.edu or at the following address:

Please note that while the Application states that the letters of recommendation need to be mailed to the department, they are now part of the online application. Therefore, they are typically submitted by your recommenders online. They can still choose to mail a hard copy to the department directly.

Information about readmission to the graduate program after not being formally registered for some time or about a transfer from another UMD program can be found here and here. Notice that any graduate credits earned at UMD or any other institution expire after seven years. That means that you can only use the credit towards meeting the graduation requirements within seven years since you started a particular course.

Additional useful information for international student can be found at International Student Services web.

Financial Assistance

Application for financial assistance is distinct from application for admission into the Program in Applied and Computational Mathematics. In contrast to the procedure of applying for admittance, all materials supporting an application for financial assistance are to be sent directly to the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

Graduate students enrolled in the program in Applied and Computational Mathematics are eligible for teaching and research assistantships in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Teaching assistants lead small discussion sections of large lecture courses, grade papers and examinations, and may occasionally teach an entry-level course on their own.

Graduate teaching assistants are typically appointed and the 50% level (approximately 20 hours of teaching-related duties a week). The current salary for a typical half-time level is over $13,000 for 9 months. In addition, teaching assistants at the half-time level receive a full waiver of tuition and health insurance benefits. The Department also provides summer support to students working on their research topics. More information about teaching assistantships can be found here and in the Graduate School web.

Each year the Graduate School awards a small number of fellowships to new students who will enter the University's graduate program the following Fall semester. These one-year fellowships provide a stipend plus tuition for the academic year. Candidates are nominated by our Program in February. Thus, students wishing to be considered for nomination must have all application materials to the Department of Mathematics and Statistics by January 15.

The Graduate School supplies an Application for Graduate Assistantship or Graduate School Fellowship and three Application Reference Forms when responding to an enquiry about the Program in Applied and Computational Mathematics. To apply for financial assistance, the following items should be sent directly to the Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

  • Completed Application for Graduate Assistantship or Graduate School Fellowship, including the statement on career objectives, teaching/research experience, etc. requested by that form.
  • The letters of recommendation submitted as a part of Application for Admission are used for Financial Aid Application. Additional letters can by submitted at applicant’s discretion.

Deadlines: Students can apply for financial aid at any time. Those wishing to enter the program in the Fall semester should have all application materials submitted by February 15; late applications will be considered if resources are available.
