Entrance Requirements and Procedures Download Application Materials
An undergraduate degree in mathematics, statistics (or a related field, such as computer science), or its foreign equivalent is the normal prerequisite to admission. However, a student with a degree in any major and with a substantial background in mathematics or statistics is encouraged to apply. An applicant who lacks certain lower-level prerequisites for graduate level courses may make up these deficiencies while enrolled in the program. Because the program involves broad and often interdisciplinary programs os study with a wide variety of emphases, the strength of an applicant's general background will play an important role in the admissions process. Note: All materials pertaining to admission into the Program in Applied and Computational Mathematics are to be sent to the Graduate School at the above address.
Deadlines: Applicants seeking to enroll during the Fall term must submit all material by July 15. For initial enrollment in the Spring semester, the deadline is November 1.
Application for financial assistance is distinct from application for admission into the Program in Applied and Computational Mathematics. In contrast to the procedure of applying for admittance, all materials supporting an application for financial assistance are to be sent directly to the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Graduate students enrolled in the program in Applied and Computational Mathematics are eligible for teaching and research assistantships in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Teaching assistants lead small discussion sections of large lecture courses, grade papers and examinations, and may occasionally teach an entry-level course on their own. Graduate teaching assistants are typically appointed and the 50% level (approximately 20 hours of teaching-related duties a week). The current salary for a typical half-time level is over $10,500 for 9 months. In addition, teaching assistants at the half-time level receive a full waiver of tuition and health insurance benefits. The Department also provides summer support to students working on their research topics. Each year the Graduate School awards a small number of fellowships to new students who will enter the University's graduate program the following Fall semester. These one-year fellowships provide a stipend plus tuition for the academic year. Candidates are nominated by our Program in February. Thus, students wishing to be considered for nomination must have all application materials to the Department of Mathematics and Statistics by January 15. The Graduate School supplies an Application for Graduate Assistantship or Graduate School Fellowship and three Application Reference Forms when responding to an enquiry about the Program in Applied and Computational Mathematics. To apply for financial assistance, the following items should be sent directly to the Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.
Deadlines: Students can apply for financial aid at any time. Those wishing to enter the program in the Fall semester should have all application materials submitted by March 1; late applications will be considered if resources are available.
