UMD Undergraduate Studies in Mathematics and Statistics

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics responds to the ever-increasing demands for the mathematical sciences in today's society by providing an integrated set of academic and research programs designed to prepare students for careers in business, industry, education, and government. The foundation for studies in the mathematical sciences is a solid high school education, preferably one with at least three and a half years of mathematics.

Programs in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics are designed to develop competence in mathematical reasoning, promote technical expertise in the mathematical sciences, and provide students with an appreciation of the diversity of mathematical science applications and career options. Every year as part of their educational experience many mathematics and statistics students work on faculty-guided research projects funded through the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP).

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics, within the College of Science and Engineering, offers the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Mathematics and the Bachelor of Science degree in Statistics and Actuarial Science. We offer cooperatively with the UMD Department of Education the Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.S.) degree for those who want to teach at the secondary level. The department also offers a Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Applied and Computatioinal Mathematics.

All students pursuing the B.S. degree in Mathematics or the B.S. degree in Statistics and Actuarial Science are required to satisfy a common core of basic classes. This includes Computer Science I (5 credits), Calculus I and II (10 credits), Differential Equations with Linear Algebra (4 credits) and Probability & Statistics (4 credits).

The B.S. Degree in Mathematics also requires upper division courses in linear algebra, analysis, discrete mathematics and electives, for a total of 50 credits in the major. Included is a one-credit Undergraduate Seminar lecture series that showcases the diverse applications of mathematical sciences and topics not normally taught in other classes. The department recommends (but does not require) that students select an area of emphasis among designated clusters of mathematics electives. These course clusters are intended for students wishing to pursue concentrations in Applied Analysis, Applied Discrete Mathematics, Computation, Mathematics Education, or pre-Graduate Studies. See Areas of Emphasis for more information. Students should discuss the selection of appropriate electives with their advisers. Required courses plus electives and courses taken outside the department must total at least 120 credits. The department offers a B.S. Minor in Mathematics, as well.

The B.S. Degree in Statistics and Actuarial Science serves as a stepping-stone to the actuarial profession, graduate school, and jobs in data analysis. The degree shares much of the same lower division core of classes and Undergraduate Seminar as the B.S. in Mathematics, but differs in the required upper division classes. Required courses (49-50 credits) plus electives and courses taken outside the department must total at least 120 credits. Those considering actuarial careers are encourage to begin taking the actuarial examinations while in residence at UMD. Information regarding the examinations can be obtain from statistics faculty.

Students pursuing careers in mathematics teaching within secondary schools prepare with a B.A.S. Degree in Teaching Mathematics which is offered in conjunction with the College of Education and Human Service Professions. Before entering the upper division, a B.A.S. student must demonstrate proficiency in basic calculus and computer programming as part of 18 required lower division credits. Also required are 72 upper division credits in education, mathematics and statistics. Many B.A.S. students find it advantageous to also complete the course requirements for a second major or coaching certification. A minimum of 120 credits is required for the B.A.S. degree.
