Overview
The University of Minnesota, School of Medicine Duluth Quentin
N. Burdick Rural Interdisciplinary Training grant supports innovative
methods to prepare health care providers for practice in rural
communities. Students from the core professions of nursing, pharmacy,
physician assistant, social work, dentistry and medicine learn
together in a rural educational setting, sharing learning experiences
and gaining an understanding and appreciation for the expertise
each health discipline brings to the health care team.
The School of Medicine Duluth has been the recipient of two Burdick grants. The
first expanded the core of disciplines, created distance learning modules, and
introduced a telemedicine program in seven rural sites. The second grant has
built upon the foundation initially established. This project will encourage
new and innovative models for student learning while focusing on geriatric care,
providing educational opportunities for rural health care practitioners, encouraging
research in rural communities and increasing cultural awareness.
