Research

One of our Mechanical Engineering students Micki Grover conducted research to design and create a toy for children with special developmental needs.

Top-Notch Research

The Mechanical & Industrial Engineering faculty members are dedicated researchers that make sure students have plenty of opportunities to try their hands at research, too.

Our department also covers a wide range of expertise and students are given the chance to work one-on-one with their professors and as part of a team and they often present their work locally, regionally and nationally.

Working with Students

The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) is a great way for students to get involved in undergraduate research.

Students can apply twice a year, at the beginning of October and March. Generally, more than 70% of proposals are approved and students are paid a stipend to carry out their research.

Capstone Presentations

Graduating seniors put their skills to work on a real-world problem via capstone projects. The semester culminates with group presentations and an opportunity to share their research results.

Research Partners

We have many labs and facilities within our department for student, staff and faculty use.

And we have research partners like the Natural Resources Research Institute (NRRI) and great resources like the UMD Farm and Research Instrumentation Lab that allow us to dive deeper into research topics.

When possible, we're excited to collaborate across disciplines, too. See the below video for a project we worked on with students from the School of Fine Arts.
