What is The Global Home?

The Global Home living-learning community is a great opportunity for any first year student to join a group of students who are interested in engaging in cross-cultural dialogues and self-awareness. Students who are chosen for this living/learning community will engage in opportunities to explore complex issues of identity, gender and ethnicity, and will reach into and beyond their own cultural backgrounds and learn about the experiences of others in the UMD residence halls, and will be an exciting place to live and learn.

Students in The Global Home will be provided opportunities to attend programs and activities, during fall and spring semesters.

  • Make great friends in a lively and engage community.
  • Monthly programs led by Office of Cultural Diversity staff, Multicultural Center Student Leaders, faculty, staff, and community leaders from across the campus and the Twin Ports community that explores individual life stories about activism, expression, and culture. Find Events Here.
  • Dinners and discussions with faculty and staff.
  • Community building and leadership opportunities.
  • Special invitations to several guest lectures, symposiums, seminars, and cultural events on campus and in the wider Duluth community.
  • Small group events planned specifically for this learning community.

There is no additional cost to live on The Global Home floor. However, due to limited space, an application is required for admission to this program. Applications will be accepted from Feb 1st to May 1st 2015, and acceptance letters will be mailed in July.

Global Home residents will need to:

  • Be a first-year freshman at UMD with a housing contract.
  • Attend the Global Home kickoff meeting during orientation.
  • Register for and attend the 2-credit UMD Seminar. The seminar is Mondays/Wednesdays, from 3pm 3:50pm.
  • Attend a capstone celebration in May 2014, before finals week.

The Global Home is made possible through a collaboration of the Office of Cultural Diversity, the Office for Students in Transition and Housing and Residence Life.
