About Us

Each year the BSA is very active in the UMD community from food drives to bringing in guest speakers on an array of topics from African policy to prejudice to overcoming adversaties to motivation.  Performances by singers and musicians have been enjoyed by the whole Duluth community due to the Black Student Associations commitment to joining together in celebration of a good time and an ongoing effort to offer educational programming to the community.  The BSA also attends an educational conference every year which is intended to improve relations between the students and the community and further prepare the students for life outside of college.

Dances Held at UMD's Rafters, students from UMD and surrounding schools come to dance the night away in recognition of having a good time.  Snacks are provided and admission is affordable.  Canned goods can be used in place of admission and are later given to food shelters.  Attending a BSA dance, you can expect a live DJ playing all of the latest hits from Hip Hop, R&B and African music.  A little of something for everyone!
Kwanzaa Kwanzaa is a time to reflect, remember and pay respect to those who have fallen or worked for the better good of black people from every background. The Black Student Association does this via a student-run, semi-formal event held in the UMD Ballroom. The night is started with African Drumming and followed by poetry and African dance performances representing various countries of the world like Ethiopia. Short films, song and music round out the night and the celebration ends with a dance featuring a live DJ.  Students plan, run and perform in this free event complete with dinner and Kwanzaa gifts for children.
Thanksgiving Potluck This is a time for the members of the BSA to show off their cooking skills. With the ingredients provided by the BSA, students get to cook whatever meal they wish to share with all the other members. The Thanksgiving potluck is complete with 2 turkeys, ham and chicken and various side dishes provided by the students which include macaroni and cheese, beans and rice, puff puff, cornbread, injera, greens, fried rice, plantains, fu fu and hot dishes. BSA members meet to get a taste of everyone’s cooking over a movie and Xbox.
Black History Month Events and Films The whole month of February is a time to share and learn about our culture with the UMD and Duluth community and spread awareness and acceptance. The BSA sponsors events including speakers, entertainers and dinners throughout this month. Films like "The Spook who Sat by the Door”, “Undercover Brother”, “Higher Learning”, “Roots” and “Amistad” express a wide range of concerns, issues and topics commonly shared throughout the black community and help to open discussions about awareness. **Black History Month Events and films are to be announced.
Soul Food Dinner This formal event invites the whole of the Duluth community to our UMD Ballroom to enjoy various performers such as African dance, live jazz, poetry, gospel choirs, hip hop dance, short films, stepping, short plays and musicians. This night of entertainment is topped with a delicious Soul Food meal including all the favorites like mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, chicken, fish, greens, cornbread and peach cobbler. The night is topped off with a dance with a live DJ.
Movie Nights Movie Nights are a time for BSA members to meet, converse and discuss on a featured movie, usually concerning black people or black figures. Sometimes Movie Night may be at a theater where members enjoy a night out together. At other times, students meet at the school or in other member's homes for a potluck feel complete with discussion
Game Nights What has become to be known as “The Takeover”, BSA students gather in UMD’s Game Room the first Thursday of every month to take advantage of free pool, Xbox, and big screen TV that the school offers every Thursday night from 10pm to 1am. Member shows up in full force to enjoy pizza and pop provided by the BSA to takeover the schools free Game Night.
BSA Elections Anyone can run for a position on the BSA Executive Board which is ultimately in charge of planning events that have been decided on by the BSA. Positions are a year long commitment and officers are elected at the end of each academic school year for the upcoming year. While the number of positions and position titles may vary, the current positions are President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Public Relations, Fundraiser, Cultural Committee, and Student Representatives
Closing Social This event is our last event of the year. Open to all BSA members, we gather to recap on the year over food, and socializing. Short video, slide shows and recognition of all graduating members close the year off with smiles and tears until we see each other for another year of fun!
