The Hate Crimes Vigil began in 1998 in response to the murder of Matthew Shepard, a gay college student in Laramie, Wyoming. We gather to raise awareness of hate crimes, and remember all victims of hate crimes. By voting no, you can help MN become the first state in the nation to ever defeat such a amendment at the ballot box. Putting the majority in a place to vote on the rights of a minority is simply wrong. Speak up, speak out, speak loud and proud! Most of all...vote no. Looking for Langston is a black and white film of the recreation of high-society gay men during the Harlem Renaissance. Archival footage and photographs are intercut with the story. The film ultimately expresses the freedom of the gay Black men of the 1920s Harlem. Paris is Burning is an “outlandish” documentary depicting the Drag scene in New York city during the 1980s. It focuses mainly on the queens while they prepare and compete in the balls. Kirby Student Center, 273B, TV Lounge. The Watermelon Woman chronicles the story of a young, Black, lesbian woman in search for Black actress known as the Watermelon Woman. While she works on creating a film describing this woman’s life, we see many parallels to her own. Left Lane is an intriguing documentary depicting a year on the road with spoken-word performer Alix Olson, showing her performances and other involvements, such as political rallies, along the way.
