"A Look in the Mirror - The Memoir of a Deaf Performer"

Written and Performed in ASL by: Nic Zapko, created in collaboration with Zaraawar Mistry

Interpretation into English by Patty Gordon

Description: Born Deaf, and raised in a family of Deaf and hearing people, Nic Zapko grew up in an environment of tolerance, acceptance and understanding. But after the death of her mother, when Nic was still a young teenager, her family fell apart and became estranged from each other. Nic herself fell into a cycle of poverty, neglect and isolation. But a chance encounter with a theater company gives her renewed hope and an opportunity to build a new family. Told with humor and compassion, her hard-hitting true story of loss, despair and redemption is performed in ASL. (Recommended for ages 13+. Run Time is 90 minutes with no intermission).

Nelly Ortiz is a leader from MSN's Autonomous Center in Albany Park, a largely immigrant neighborhood on Chicago's north side.  Nelly worked in a Coca Cola bottling plant in Cuenca, Ecuador before moving to Chicago in 1995.  Currently she is involved in organizing Cleaning Power, a women's housecleaning cooperative.

Presentation from Dr. Joy DeGruy, author of “Post-Traumatic Slave Syndrome: America’s Enduring Legacy of Injury and Healing,” which addresses the residual impacts of trauma on African Descendants in the Americas. Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome lays the groundwork for understanding how the past has influenced the present, and opens up the discussion of how we can use the strengths we have gained to heal. In brief, Dr. DeGruy presents facts, statistics and documents that illustrate how varying levels of both clinically induced and socially learned residual stress related issues were passed along through generations as a result of slavery.
