Woodwinds
Welcome
to the UMD Woodwind Area! UMD offers wide variety of opportunities for woodwind
players (flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon and saxophone). Whether you would
like to major in music, take a secondary woodwind instrument or continue
lessons and perform in an ensemble, UMD students can participate in the
UMD Woodwind Area. Degree options include the Bachelor of Music Education,
Bachelor of Music Performance, Bachelor of Music Jazz Studies, Bachelor
of Music Theory/Composition, Bachelor of Arts, and even a Music Minor. In
addition to undergraduate degrees, UMD also offers the Master
of Music Performance and Master
of Music Education. All music majors receive a weekly one-hour applied
lesson with a member of our distinguished faculty and participate in studio
master classes. Non-music majors can also register for lessons which are
30 minutes in length. We also provide special clinics and workshops with
visiting guest artists throughout the academic year.
Woodwind students have many performance opportunities including the UMD Symphonic Wind Ensemble, UMD Symphony Orchestra, Jazz Ensembles and Combos, Concert Band, Marching and Pep Bands. Auditions for these ensembles occur during the first week of the semester and are open to all UMD students. The area also has Student Chamber music groups including flute choir, saxophone ensemble, woodwind quintet, and other faculty and student initiated combinations. These chamber groups perform in weekly departmental recital hours and at the woodwind chamber music ensemble concert which takes place at the end of each semester.
Feel free to contact any of the woodwind faculty here for more information about specific woodwind instruction at UMD.
