It is my pleasure to announce that the 40th annual Head of the Lakes Jazz Festival will be held on the UMD campus, Friday and Saturday, March 8th and 9th, 2013. This Festival will be non-competitive in nature, offering positive, learning-based experiences for young jazz ensembles and many outstanding performances.
Schedule
» » Our Saturday evening featured guest artist will be Dave Pietro, saxophonist, composer and music educator. A native of Southboro, Massachusetts, Dave Pietro has been on the New York music scene since 1987. His talents as a gifted saxophonist, composer, and educator have made him an in-demand musician who has performed at jazz clubs, jazz festivals, schools and concert halls in more than 30 countries throughout Asia, Australia, Europe, North and South America.
For more information about Mr. Pietro, visit http://www.davepietro.com/ .
» » Also in concert on Friday, March 8th will be Carl Allen Quartet. Carl Allen, swing artist and drummer, has been teaching music and touring the nation since 1982. Working with artists such as the Benny Green Trio, George Coleman, Freddie Hubbard and Christian McBride, Allen says, "My ultimate goal is to get to a level like Art Blakey, Art Taylor, Elvin Jones and Billy Higgins and these cats who, every time they sit down behind a set of drums it's swinging. The power of swing is something else and once I get to that level everything else falls into place."
