RESEARCH

NATSRL focuses on applied research projects utilizing both faculty and students to generate solutions to issues and problems unique to transportation systems here in the Northland. Projects typically fall under one of the four major areas detailed below.

Focus Areas

  • Advanced Sensor Research Laboratory (ASRL)
ASRL projects focus on developing prototypical sensor technologies, and enhancing present-day traffic sensor capabilites relating to pavement/road conditions, traffic density, and meterological conditions.
  • Transportation Data Research Laboratory (TDRL)
TDRL projects provide research on the centralized management, analysis and sharing of real-time, sensor-generated data.
For detailed information, please visit our TDRL web site.
  • Transportation Engineering Research Laboratory (TERL)
TERL projects involve application of operations research and industrial engineering techniques to increase organizational efficiencies and optimize road maintenance activities such as snowplowing and fleet maintenance.
  • Education and Outreach Programs (EOP)
EOP projects focus on transportation-related research activities utilizing undergraduate student researchers. Many of these projects involve web-based development programs designed to facillitate public access to our data collections.
