NATSRL > Main

Welcome to the Northland Advanced Transportation Systems Research Laboratories. NATSRL was established in March 2001, with a charter to investigate transportation issues unique to northern Minnesota, and in particular, those issues related to winter transportation systems for small urban areas. NATSRL is a cooperative research and education initiative of the Minnesota Department of Transportation, the University of Minnesota Center for Transportation Studies and its Intelligent Transportation Systems Institute, and the UMD College of Science & Engineering.

The major operational issues for Northland transportation systems include:
  • Efficient real-time detection of hazardous road/weather/traffic conditions
  • Advanced warning and guidance to drivers with road/weather/traffic information
  • Winter road snow removal and fleet management decision support with on-line weather/pavement information
  • Large-scale event and tourist traffic management
  • On-line and off-line assessment of area-wide systems performance
  • Road/traffic sign inventory and management

The research, education, and outreach activities of NATSRL involve both faculty and students in the Departments of Electrical & Computer Engineering, Mechanical & Industrial Engineering, and Computer Science at the University of Minnesota Duluth.
