UMD HONORS AREA BUSINESSES AT ELEVENTH ANNUAL ENGINEERING/INDUSTRY BANQUET

The University of Minnesota, Duluth (UMD) College of Science and Engineering (CSE) presented a Special Recognition Award, four Industry Awards, and 63 student scholarships at its eleventh annual UMD Engineering/Industry Banquet held October 7, 1999.

Dean Sabra Anderson, presented the College of Science and Engineering Special Recognition Award to Louis M. Benepe, Chief Plant Engineer, Hibbing Taconite Co. Dean Anderson praised Mr. Benepe for his "extraordinary contributions to the strength and quality of programs at UMD." She went on to say, "Mr. Benepe is recognized for his energetic and continued support of the engineering programs at UMD, his attention to the educational needs of engineers, and his understanding of the importance of the industrial links to education."

UMD Industry Awards were presented to four area companies: Potlatch Corporation, K-Byte Hibbing Mfg., ME International, and Hutchinson Technology. The firms were recognized for their "substantial contributions and ongoing support to Engineering programs at UMD."

This year 63 student scholarships totaling nearly $50,000, donated by regional industries and individuals, were presented at the banquet. The event was attended by 170 people including representatives of businesses, faculty, staff, and friends of the Engineering Departments at UMD.

Keynote speaker for the event was Andrew R. Lucero, Minnesota Power, Director of Information Technology and Services. Mr. Lucero's topic was "Minnesota Power's Y2K Project".
