Duluth Native and UMD Graduate Elected a Fellow of American Association for the Advancement of Science

Roy Hammerstedt, a 1963 UMD Graduate


Duluth native and 1963 UMD chemistry graduate Roy Hammerstedt has been elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). The AAAS selects as Fellows, members whose "efforts on behalf of the advancement of science or its applications are scientifically or socially distinguished".

Hammerstedt is a retired professor of biochemistry from Penn State University. He currently heads his own company, BioPore, Inc., which seeks to develop commercial applications of innovative biotechnologies.

He is married to the former Susan Shepard of Duluth, who is also a 1963 graduate of UMD in business education.. She recently retired as head of computerized office specialist programs from the South Hills School of Business & Technology. The couple has two children, Scott and Heather.
