UMD Graduate and Minnesota Native General Bruce Carlson to speak at Air Force ROTC Banquet

Carlson is Key Adviser to Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington D.C.

Lieutenant General Bruce Carlson will be returning to his alma mater, the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD), this weekend, February 16 and 17, as guest speaker for the Air Force ROTC Annual Dining-Out (formal military banquet). General Carlson is a Minnesota native and a 1971 UMD graduate with a degree in accounting from the School of Business & Economics. He was recognized a "Distinguished Graduate" from the UMD AFROTC program.

General Carlson currently is stationed at the Pentagon in Washington D.C. where he serves as key advisor to the Joint Chiefs of Staff on military resources and budgetary issues. An experienced pilot, he is a former Commander of the F-117 Stealth Fighter Wing.

General Carlson will spend Friday at UMD touring the campus and meeting with students and cadets from the AFROTC program. He will also tour the Minnesota Air National Guard units in Duluth and Minneapolis, along with visiting his family in Brainerd, Minnesota over the weekend.

The Air Force ROTC program has been part of the UMD campus for over 50 years. ROTC provides leadership training and education to prepare students to be commissioned as Air Force officers. The program currently has 60 students from UMD, UW-Superior and College of St. Scholastica. This summer the program will commission 13 cadets as 2nd lieutenants in the Air Force. These graduates will go on to careers in flying and other support areas.
