Dean of UMD School of Fine Arts Announced
Dean Jack Bowman
International Orchestral Conductor


University of Minnesota Duluth Vice Chancellor for Academic Administration Vince Magnuson has announced the appointment of Jack Bowman as Dean of the UMD School of Fine Arts effective July 1st.

Dean Bowman holds a Doctor of Musical Arts (D.M.A.) degree in Performance from the University of Michigan. He most recently served as Dean of the Petrie School of Music at Converse College, Spartanburg, South Carolina.

A professional orchestral conductor, Maestro Bowman has conducted extensively in the United States and in France, Belgium, Germany, Hungary, Austria, and Italy. He is known for his breadth of conducting repertoire including orchestral, ballet, opera and pop.

Professor Bowman has recorded two CD's with the Janacek orchestra in The Czech Republic, and he has accompanied such international soloists as Leonard Rose, Dave Brubeck, Robert Merrill, Tony Bennett, Doc Severinsen and Glen Campbell.

The UMD School of Fine Arts is one of six collegiate units at the University of Minnesota Duluth. It is composed of the academic departments of art & design, music, and theatre; the Tweed Museum of Art; Glensheen historic estate; the Marshall Performing Arts Center; and the nearly completed Weber Music Hall. It serves as a cultural and artistic center for the campus and northern Minnesota.

The School currently serves over 650 undergraduate and graduate students in approximately fifteen different degree areas including the Master of Music and Master of Fine Arts in Graphic Design. In addition to serving its majors and minors, the School provides required liberal education courses in the arts for nearly 9000 University students.

The School of Fine arts has 150 faculty and staff, including 80 full-time employees.
