UMD Professors Create Theme
for National Math Awareness Month
"Mathematics and Art" Chosen as Winner

"Mathematics and Art," a theme created by University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) Professor of Mathematics Joseph Gallian and UMD Associate Professor of Mathematics Douglas Dunham has been chosen as the theme for National Math Awareness Month celebrated in April. The theme and its accompanying text and web page were created by Professor Gallian. A graphic image fitting that theme was created by Dunham and then converted into a poster.

The text written by Gallian on the poster chronicles the historical connection between mathematics and art spanning over 2,000 years. Gallian and Dunham worked together on the project with the help of UMD student Abhijit Parsekar. The Joint Policy Board for Mathematics will distribute 14,000 copies of the poster across the nation.

Web page: http://mathforum.org/mam/03/. Site includes downloadable posters, essays, and links to other sites about mathematics and art.

As part of the 2003 National Math Awareness Month activities, UMD will present a series of lectures with the theme "Mathematics and Art." The presentations will take place each Thursday in April at UMD. The talks are free and open to the public. They are intended for a general audience. First lecture:
