The University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) Department of Education has been professionally accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). This certifies the College of Education and Human Service Professions to continue to oversee the professional education offerings at UMD, both at the initial teacher preparation level and at advanced preparation levels.

The NCATE now accredits 554 colleges of education in the United States. These institutions produce over 125,000 new teachers each year, comprising two-thirds of the nation's graduating teachers.
