The School of Medicine, Duluth will hold another in its series of "Doc Talks" lectures.
Ed Perkins, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Department at the School of Medicine, Duluth will present "The Science and Politics of Human Stem Cells: Fact and Fiction" September 14 at 7:30 p.m. in room 142 of the School of Medicine, Duluth.

Human stem cells are fast becoming a cornerstone in regenerative medicine. While scientific advances continue, the medical use of human embryonic stem cells versus adult-derived stem cells has emerged as a political wedge issue in the coming election. Dr. Ed Perkins will describe what we know about stem cells, their therapeutic potential and the controversies surrounding stem cell research.

Dr. Perkin's research is focused on characterizing human stem cells and engineering adult-derived stem cells for therapeutic applications.

The event is free and the public is cordially invited.

"Doc Talks" is a monthly public lecture series addressing current issues in medicine. With the exception of the October talk, "Doc Talks" will be offered on the 2nd Tuesday of every month at 7:30 p.m. in Room 142 of the School of Medicine, Duluth.
