Wildlife Dioramas by Well-Known Artist Carl Gawboy
Successfully Removed from
UMD Life Science Building Renovation Project

The Three Paintings Remain Intact

The three wildlife dioramas featuring paintings by well-known local artist and UMD alumnus Carl Gawboy have been successfully removed intact from the UMD Life Science Building. The Life Science Building is currently undergoing a $15.2 million renovation to prepare state-of-the-art facilities for the College of Pharmacy, Duluth and the UMD Department of Biology.

Diorama in crate.

Painted on cork board when the building was constructed in 1968, the artwork was then fastened to plaster walls, making them very difficult to remove. The painstaking process was planned and successfully completed by the UMD Facilities Management Department carpentry crew.

The three paintings include:

  • A depiction of Hawk Ridge, done in acrylic
  • A winter scene of a cedar swamp, done in oil
  • A beaver pond, done in oil

The three dioramas have been crated and placed in storage until an appropriate new home for them is found.

The $15.2 million renovation of the 38 year-old UMD Life Science Building was kicked-off in a celebration ceremony held on the campus today. The building is set to open Fall Semester 2007.

note: Photographs of the diorama removal process are available from UMD.
