Congressman-elect Keith Ellison to Speak at UMD
November 18

First Muslim Elected to US Congress

The UMD Master of Advocacy and Political Leadership program will present a speech by U.S. Congressman-elect Keith Ellison, the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Congress and the first African-American elected from Minnesota, on Saturday November 18. The presentation will take place at 12 noon, in Bohannon Hall 90. It is free and open to the public.

In his speech entitled "A Unique Road to Congress" Congressman-elect Ellison will discuss his political awakening and his recent campaign in Minnesota's Fifth Congressional District (Minneapolis area), as well as his views on future events.

Congressman-elect Ellison is a 42-years old lawyer and community advocate. He graduated from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1990. A Detroit native, Ellison and his wife Kim have resided in the Minneapolis area for the past 17 years with their four children, ages 17, 15, 10 and 9.

The lecture is part of the Public Affairs Lecture Series, sponsored by the UMD Master of Advocacy and Political Leadership program (MAPL). MAPL is a weekend Masters Degree program with 61 students from throughout Minnesota.
