BigBelly Solar Powered Trash Compactors
Installed on UMD Campus

Part of UMD's Commitment to Energy Efficiency and Sustainability

They've arrived at UMD!

Four BigBelly Solar powered trash compactors and recycling centers were installed around the UMD campus this week by UMD Facilities Management crews. BigBelly Solar powered trash compactors are now being used in 40 states and 20 countries. Compaction is better and cheaper than collection

These attractive black units hold four times more litter than normal trash cans by compacting trash using solar power. Fewer pick-ups saves money in labor and fuel and frees staff for other work tasks. They are part of UMD's strong commitment to improving energy efficiency and sustainability.

The BigBelly Solar powered trash compactors and recycling centers also mean no litter spilling out of the barrels. UMD will produce 1/4th the greenhouse gas from vehicle trips to service the barrels, with less vehicle noise and air pollution.

These four units can be found at the following locations across the UMD campus:

  • Lot B in front of the Darland Administration Building
  • Lot C corner by Malosky Stadium
  • Ordean Court by the Sports and Health Center
  • Kirby Bus Hub
