Newman Civic Fellows Award Received by UMD College of Liberal Arts Student

Erica Karrels, a junior in the College of Liberal Arts program at the University of Minnesota Duluth, received the Newman Civic Fellows Award by Campus Compact. Nominated by UMD Chancellor Lendley C. Black, Karrels is one of 135 students from 30 states honored with this award. The Newman Civic Fellows Award recognizes inspiring college student leaders who have demonstrated an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country.

Karrels is a student leader active in women's rights issues. As a women's studies major, she has been committed to women's issues and has been involved in service-learning classes connecting to social issues. Through these curricular experiences, she became a sexual assault advocate with the Program for Aid of Victims of Sexual Assault, volunteering on a weekly basis to advocate for women's rights. As president of the UMD student group "Students Engaged in Rewarding Volunteer Experiences" for the past two years, she has built awareness for community issues while engaging students through service.

About Campus Compact

Campus Compact is a national coalition of more than 1,100 college and university presidents—representing some 6 million students—who are committed to fulfilling the civic purposes of higher education to improve community life and to educate students for civic and social responsibility

Dr. Frank Newman—one of the founders of Campus Compact—had a tremendous impact on American education and its role in the development of citizens who are eager and prepared to make a difference. He dedicated his life to creating systemic change through education reform.

College and university presidents and chancellors have nominated the best-of-the-best: promising college student leaders who have demonstrated an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country. Through service, research, and advocacy, these Newman Civic Fellows are seeking to better understand themselves, the root causes of social issues, and effective mechanisms for creating lasting change.
