Professor to Be Honored with Gallery of Success Award

UMD Department of Music Associate Professor Jean R. Perrault will be honored at his alma mater, Temple University in Philadelphia, Penssylvania, with the Gallery of Success Award from the Boyer College of Music and Dance on Friday, October 14, 2011 at 12:30 p.m. As a part of the ceremony, Perrault's portrait will be unveiled in the Great Court of Mitten Hall.

Perrault graduated with a Bachelor's in Music in 1985, and a Masters in Music in 1993. He is an accomplished violinist, conductor, composer, editor and educator. He currently is the director of orchestras, and professor of violin and viola at UMD. In addition to his teaching position, Perrault maintains an active schedule as a performer, conductor and composer.

During his time at Temple, Perrault was a violin performance major during both his undergraduate and graduate careers. While at Boyer, he studied with the acclaimed violinist Professor Helen Kwalwasser.

As a violinist, Perrault has performed with the New York Pops and the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, as well as on Broadway and with many other ensembles. His conducting engagements include organizations in the United States, France, Haiti, Russia, Italy, Venezuela and Turkey. Perrault's compositions have been performed by the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia; the Holy Trinity Philharmonic Orchestra in Haiti; and, performance groups in numerous cities including New York City.

A recent project of Perrault's has been the editing and orchestration of piano works by Haitian Classical Composers. The Borromeo String Quartet on the Living Archives label recorded his most recent composition, "Exodus."

With music as his passion, Perrault often is a panelist on national and international instrumental and conducting competitions. He is also a founding member and artistic director of the Kako Foundation, an organization dedicated to bringing art education to the youth of the United States and Haiti.
