UMD Students Reuse and Recycle at Semester's End

UMD's student-run Better Neighbors Program and the Facilities Management Department are working to ease the effect the end of the school year has on waste in the community.

They are presenting three programs, a Furniture Swap, free Furniture Pick-up, and a Goodwill Drop Off Site on campus.

Furniture Swap
UMD Senior Business and Economics student and Better Neighbors Coordinator Alex Aschenbrenner organized a 'Furniture Swap' for students on Facebook. The swap site is an on-going effort which provides students a safe place to buy and sell used furniture, rather than throwing it away.

Furniture Pick-up
Should students decide that they do want to recycle their furniture, the Better Neighbors Program and UMD Facilities Management teamed up to provide a Furniture Pick-up service from May 7 through June 1, from 8 am to 6 pm. The service is offered to current UMD students living near campus who have unwanted furniture or other household goods too large for everyday garbage or recycling services. The program picked up over 1,000 pieces of furniture last year.

Goodwill Drop Off Site
This year, for the first time, there will be a site for charitable donations of clothing and other items set up by the Goodwill on the UMD campus through June 2.
