UMD Masters Program Ranks in Top Tier of U.S. News and World Report

According to the 2012 U.S. News and World Report (USN&WR), the UMD Masters of Social Work ranked in the top tier, placing 79th in the USN&WR graduate school "Health" category. The national assessment included surveys that were conducted during the fall of 2011, handled by the research firm Ipsos Public Affairs. Among the programs surveyed, the UMD master of social work, accredited by the Council on Social Work Education, was selected and highly ranked.

"The UMD masters of social work offers an advanced generalist curriculum with a focus on American Indian social services," said Dr. Melanie Shepard, UMD Social Work Department Head. The program offers courses in the areas of child welfare, clinical, and community practice. "We have notable graduates, including Duluth City Councilor Emily Larson, who have pursued human service occupations that improve the quality of life in our region."

In addition, the UMD Speech-Language Pathology program ranked 131 nationally. Both programs encourage student development in knowledge and skills for clinical, administrative, and community practice.
