2012 UMD Homecoming Events

UMD carries on its rich tradition of Homecoming this month with a weeklong celebration of the university and its community.

The festivities kick off Saturday, Oct. 13 at 5:30 pm with a tailgate party at Grandma's Sports Garden. There will be giveaways, drink specials, and the Bulldog Buffet. Then it's game on when Chancellor Black drops the puck as the men's hockey team takes on Ohio State at Amsoil Arena at 7:05 pm. The hockey continues Sunday, Oct. 14 when the five-time national champion women's hockey team goes head to head with the University of Wisconsin- Madison at 3:05 pm.

From 12pm to 1pm Monday, Oct. 15, the first 100 Bulldogs at Minnesota Power Plaza on the corner of Lake Avenue and Superior Street will feast on a free lunch from Green Mill. Chancellor Lynn Black and Coach Bob Nielson will stop by around 12:15 pm. Music from KUMD and the Bulldog Marching Band will get everyone in the spirit. Bulldog athletes and Champ will be available for meet and greets. Homecoming shirts will be on sale for $5.

The UMD Student Association will unveil the new Bulldog street signs on Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 6pm. The 'Dogs Eat Dogs' hotdog-eating contest and pep rally will follow the ceremony. Fall athletes will gorge themselves to take home the title. KUMD and the Bulldog Marching Band will play the jams; Texas Roadhouse will provide the hotdogs. After everyone is stuffed, the volleyball team plays St. Cloud State at 7pm in the Romano Gym.

Celebrate Homecoming month with Oktoberfest, 11am to 1:30 pm at Kirby Plaza on Wednesday, Oct. 17. UMD Stores sponsors this fun event with the Chmielewski Fun Time Band playing polka tunes and specialty brats.

The Bagley Pond will be alive with action for the Cardboard Boat Races Thursday, Oct. 18 at 4:30 pm. Find your favorite team and enjoy a free Jimmy John's sub as the Mechanical Engineering Club sponsors this event.

Bulldogs reunite for the Class of 1962 50th Reunion Dinner Friday, Oct. 19. Dinner is served at 5pm at the Kitchi Gammi Club sponsored by the UMD Alumni Association. Later that night is the Homecoming Concert sponsored by the Kirby Program Board. Midwest Selects with Cato will perform in the Kirby Ballroom at 7pm.

Students on the dining plan can the start the day of the big game off right with the Breakfast of Champions at the Residence Hall Dining Center Saturday, Oct. 20. Then, at 10am is the Homecoming 5K sponsored by RSOP. The trail for the race winds through Bagley Nature Area. For information on registration, see RSOP.

A campus tour for those who haven't been on campus for a while and those who are new to UMD will be held at 10am. Joy Michalicek and John Kessler from UMD Facilities Management will guide the tour. The group will meet in the UMD Library Lobby. Then at 10:45 am the Greek Life Chariot Races first heats get underway. The starting line will be in Ordean Court, with streets on campus blocked for safety. The champion will be declared during halftime, after the final heat races.

The Tailgate Party starts at 11:30 am with a free Famous Dave's Pig Roast, face painting, and lots of giveaways. A reunion for all football alumni will be in the new Honey Bear's Den. Then it's the main event: game time at 1pm when the Bulldogs face off with the NSIC Beavers. For ticket information, visit umdbulldogs.com.
