UMD to Host Three Tribal Consultation Sessions

The University of Minnesota Duluth is inviting tribal members and educators to a series of meetings to determine the needs of Indian Country. This event reflects UMD's vision statement, which includes, "…serving the educational needs of indigenous peoples, as well as the economic growth, cultural preservation, and sovereignty of the American Indian nations of the region, the state and North America."

The meetings are scheduled for:
August 2 - Kirby Student Center Garden Room, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
October 11 - Kirby Student Center Garden Room, 2 – 4 p.m.
November 15 - Mystic Lake Casino Hotel (Prior Lake), 1 – 3 p.m.

"We feel the best way to partner with Native Nations is to have them included in our programs from the beginning," explains Tadd Johnson, Chair of UMD's American Indian Studies department. "The ideas of Indian country need to be heard, vetted by Indian country, and put into practice by UMD."

The meetings are set up to determine three things:
• What types of certificate programs are needed on reservations for the tribal work force?
• What is the best way to set up an institute at UMD for the study, preservation, and protection of tribal sovereignty? For example, should there be an advisory board of tribal leaders?
• What types of research should a Department of Tribal Sovereignty Institute conduct?

The meetings will be facilitated by American Indian Studies department members Tadd Johnson, Ed Minnema, and Joseph Bauerkemper.
