UMD Chancellor Affirms Commitment to Equity, Diversity and Social Justice on Duluth's Day of Remembrance

During this Day of Remembrance, we look back at our past to learn from a painful event in our local history, honor all victims of racism, and renew a commitment to advancing equity, diversity and social justice.

Members of the UMD community have played an instrumental role in uncovering the truth and making sure that the 1920 lynchings of Elias Clayton, Elmer Jackson and Isaac McGhie in downtown Duluth are never forgotten.

As the Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial approaches its 10th anniversary, we commend all of the volunteers who have made the monument become an enduring reminder of the work that needs to be done to make our community more inclusive.

UMD students, staff, and faculty will continue to join with the Duluth-Superior community in fostering partnerships to promote and support diversity, inclusiveness, and social justice initiatives.
