UMD’s Communication Department Hosts “Friend-Raising” Event

DULUTH, MN — In a twist on traditional homecoming events, the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) Communication Department has invited alumni for a “Home-Comm-ing”. UMD Comm alums will gather for a brunch at the Greysolon Plaza, Sunday, October 6, at 11 am to re-connect. UMD Chancellor Lendley Black will open the event with a welcoming speech. Duluth Mayor Don Ness will talk about initiatives to increase professional opportunities for college graduates in the Duluth. UMD Vice Chancellor Andrea Schokker will also be on hand to meet and greet the department’s strong alumni base.

This is an outreach event to UMD Communication alumni in a desire to create networks between them and other alumni, as well as with current students. Department head Michael Sunnafrank says, “It’s about building relationships.”

Department members have used Facebook pages, letter-writing, and other old-fashioned person-to-person efforts to attract alumni back to Duluth. To date, 150 people have said they are “comm”ing back to their collegiate home.
