Award Glossary

Federal Pell Grant

The Federal Pell Grant does not have to be repaid. Students are eligible to receive up to 12 semesters (or its equivalent) of Pell funding. If you register for less than 12 credits per term your Pell Grant will be reduced based on your enrollment level at the end of the drop/add period.

Federal SEOG Grant

The Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (SEOG) is a federal grant awarded to students with demonstrated exceptional need as determined by federal regulations. You must be enrolled full-time (minimum of 12 credits per semester) to be eligible for the entire award. If you are enrolled for less than full-time, your award will be reduced or cancelled.

Federal Work Study

Work-study funding represents the opportunity to work on-campus, off-campus at a Community Service position, or with the America Reads/America Counts tutoring program; however, it is not a guarantee of employment. Work-study funding increases your job opportunities because some on-campus employers hire only work-study awarded students.  As a work-study student employee, your earnings are paid in part by federal or state funding and are considered need-based employment.  Earnings from need-based employment are not counted as income on your FAFSA.  The award amount offered to you is the total amount you may earn in your work-study position and you will be paid for the hours you work with a bi-weekly paycheck.  For job postings, search UMD's Student Employment web site at   Employers will ask to see your Work-study Award Confirmation email from the Financial Aid Office as documentation of your Work-Study eligibility and permission to use your award.   You will receive the award confirmation email after you accept the Work-study offer.   If you have not found employment and completed payroll documents within 30 days of the first day of class, your award may be cancelled.  Awards made after classes begin may be cancelled after 30 days if you do not complete payroll documents.

MN State Grant

You must be registered for 15 credits each semester to be eligible for the maximum Minnesota State Grant award as listed on your original FAAN. If you register for fewer credits, your award will be reduced based on the actual number of credits for which you register. You are eligible for the equivalent of eight semesters of full-time attendance at any post-secondary institution (Post-Secondary Enrollment Options attendance is excluded). The Financial Aid Office may request academic transcripts from all post-secondary schools that you have attended.
