The following scholarship programs honor entering first-year students for past accomplishments and recognize the gifts and potential they bring to the UMD community. | Clayton, Jackson, McGhie African American Scholarship | The scholarship is awarded to an incoming African-American first-year student each year. | National Merit Scholarship | Students must list one of the University of Minnesota campuses as their first choice on the National Merit Scholarship application to be eligible. Sax Scholarship | The University will consider in-coming freshman from the Duluth area or the Minnesota Iron Range areas plannning to pursue a pre-medical curriculum at UMD and intend to attend medical school after their undergraduate degree. Consideration will include high academic achievement, academic potential, demonstrated leadership, creativity, and community involvement. | $6,000/yr. up to four years. Renewal is available for three additional years subject to maintenance of a 3.0 cumulative University of Minnesota grade point average, full time enrollment status in a pre-med curriculum, and availability of funds. | Dennis Maki Scholarship | Selection criteria are: Two entering freshman each year will be selected; one male and one female. No specific discipline is required. | Richard & Katherine Dumas Scholarship | The Richard & Katherine Dumas Scholarship will provide a scholarship to a full-time undergraduate student at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD): The student should be a new entering freshman with the Swenson College of Science and Engineering. The scholarship may be renewed for one more year if the student has a minimum cumulaitve University of Minnesota GPA of 3.0 or greater. The student must have graduated from a St. Paul Public School. Selection criteria will include students academic record as well as financial need. | $1,000 per yr/2yrs. | Edna and Arthur Pikka Scholarship | To provide a 4-year award to a student intending to study at UMD for 4 or more years. Preference will be given to students who have graduated from an Iron Range high school and who are: 1) United States Citizens 2) permanent residents of the United States, or 3) in the United States lawfully on a non-temporary basis (i.e., refugees or asylees). Selected students must be able to demonstrate financial need. *While this is a 4-year renewable scholarship, the amount awarded each year is dependent upon funding. | $5,000 per year/4yrs Selected students must maintain at least a 3.0 GPA. | Application for admission | December 15 |
| Radisson Inndowment Reaching Higher Scholarship | To provide scholarships to undergraduate students at UMD. Scholarships shall be a minimum of $500 per student per year. Selection criteria is: students must be full-time, undergraduate students; students must be in good academic standing; a plus factor will be given to scholars from the Duluth area, if possible a Duluth high school graduate. | Senator Sam Solon Scholarship | To provide financial assistance to Minnesota students who can demonstrate financial need. According to the family's wishes, a plus factor may be applied to 1) first generation students, 2) northeastern Minnesota students, 3) students of Greek heritage, and 4) students majoring in education, business, political science or pre-medicine. | Renewable for four years. *This scholarship rotates annually between CLA & LSBE with different selection criteria for each college. | Ray E Anderson Scholarship | To Provide a scholarship each year to a worthy student who has high potential, ability and character. John O. Kangas Scholarship (Moose Lake High School students only) |
To be considered for the Kangas Scholarship: 1)Enroll at either the University of Minnesota Twin Cities (UMNTC) or Duluth (UMD) campus, 2) be a full-time student, and 3) the graduating student at Moose Lake High School with the highest grade point average will receive first preference; if that student does not accept the award then the selection will continue down in rank until a student receives the scholarship award. | Varies | Application for admission | December 15 |

| Marshall Center Awards for Excellence in Theatre or Dance | The Department of Theatre awards two scholarships to outstanding incoming students with exceptional acting or technical talent in theatre. Students who plan to be enrolled full-time as theatre majors seeking the B.F.A. degree and who demonstrate high aca demic ability are invited to apply. | Air Force ROTC Scholarships | Air Force ROTC on the UMD campus offers two, three, and four-year scholarships on a competitive basis. | Amount based on the total cost of tuition and fees. You must complete and file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to be considered for need-based forms of financial assistance.
For scholarship purposes, a student must achieve a 3.0 cumulative UMD grade point average.
