Criteria for the CBL course designation

Designation Criteria

Connection to Learning

Integration

The CBL activity is integrated into the course content and learning objectives as reflected in the course syllabus. CBL supports and enhances the academic focus of the course.

Relevance

The service, project or research experience relates to the subject matter of the course.

Synthesis

Structured activities in the class provide ongoing (not only summative) opportunities for students to analyze and synthesize their community engagement experiences and how the learning connects and relates to the course subject matter. Guided activities:

  • Examine critical issues related to their service/project/research
  • Connect the community experience to their coursework
  • Enhance the development of civic, ethical, and career skills and values
  • Create personal relevance

Evaluation

Course offers a method(s) to assess the learning derived from the CBL experience. Credit is given for student’s ability to integrate and connect the subject matter and the community experience, not for the service component alone.  However, if a student does not complete her/his service commitment this will be reflected in the grade.

Connection
To Community

Partnership

Inclusion of collaborating community organizations (COs) as respected partners is integral to the experience. (COs define student involvement in their organization in consultation with faculty/instructors, COs are orientated into the CBL process and receive a course syllabus delineating the outcomes and purpose of CBL experience, on-going communication between all partners, etc.).

Impact

Students involved provide a needed and useful service to the community and collaborating partners determine how success and impact on the community will be measured.  For example, students serve 1-3 hours a week on site or complete “XX” research for future organizational program development.

Connection to Institutional Goals

Alignment

Each CBL course will define its own content-specific learning objectives that align with the Office of Civic Engagement outcomes.  The CBL experience is aimed at the civic development of students even though they may also be focused on other outcomes.
*Emphasis on goals 2 & 5 of the strategic plan.

Impact

Faculty and instructors will collaborate with the Office of Civic Engagement to administer a pre and post CBL Experience Survey to their students.
