Mission Statement

The mission of the Office of Civic Engagement is to create a campus of citizens who are civically aware, skilled and committed to act for the public good.

The Office of Civic Engagement accomplishes this mission through curricular and co-curricular activities that create opportunities for citizens to find a meaningful role in their local, regional, national, and international communities.

Office organization

Our office is overseen by the Vice Chancellor of Academic Administration. Within our office are two permanent staff members: the Director and Community Engagement Specialist. We also host two to five AmeriCorps/VISTA members each year. Although our work-study positions change from year to year, there are typically two to five student workers helping staff our front desk and assisting with clerical duties.

Focus areas

The OCE focuses on civic understanding and awareness. This happens through activities like: screening PBS movies, hosting a semesterly Community Involvement Fair, co-hosting a semesterly or annual Book Group, and giving class presentations about civic engagement and community-based learning.
