Timelines for 2012 Field Camp

Early Application Period Begins- December 19-January 27

Intial Notice of Acceptance - January 30
Well-qualified applicants will be notified of acceptance

Late Application Period- January 30 - June 22
Qualified applicants will be accepted on a first come-first served basis

Course Registration Begins - Early March

Registration closes - June 22

Camp begins - Sunday, July 8

-Field mapping in diverse Precambrian terranes, including:
                Deformed metasedimentary rocks
                Layered mafic intrusions
                Plateau lavas and subvolcanic intrusions
                Banded iron-formation sequences
                Archean granite-greenstone belts
                Large-scale shear zones

- Mapping at various scales; from outcrop (1:250) to quadrangle (1:24,000)

- Recognizing metamorphic grade, deformational fabrics, alteration assemblages, and ore                 mineralization in the field

- Acquisition and interpretation of field geophysical data (gravity and magnetics)

- Glacial deposit mapping and introduction to drift prospecting

- Drill core logging of banded iron formation, mineralized gabbro, and tectonized                 greenstone assemblages

- Drift mapping in an underground iron mine (1/2 mile below surface)

- GIS compilation of field data (in ArcGIS) and digital map-making (in Illustrator)

CAPSTONE MAPPING PROJECT –Students will be divided into field parties of 3-6 students and an instructor during Week 5 to conduct detailed mapping in various geological terranes; the project areas have not been previously mapped in detail and will require backwoods field work, primitive camping and, in some cases, canoeing in a wilderness setting.
