Using Jabber for TAs and Students
Activate Your Account
- Open a web browser and go to https://chat.umn.edu/account. If prompted, log in using your University Internet ID and password.
- In the Account Maintenance page type in a password that you will use for accessing Jabber.
- Click the Create an Account button.
- To access UMChat go to https://chat.umn.edu.
You may wish to bookmark this page for future visits. - Log in using your University ID and the Jabber password created previously.
Joining the Psychology Chat Room
Joining a public room is very similar to joining a private room, except that no password is required.
- Click on the Join Group Chat icon in the lower left corner of the Jabber Chat window.
The Join Group Chat window appears. - Enter the room name psyhelp in the Room textfield. The room name is not case sensitive.
- To enter the room, click the Join button.
To Start Chatting:
- Type your message in the lower textfield.
- Press Shift-Enter to enter a new line
- Press Enter to post your message
Your message will show in the upper window, as well as your buddy’s response.
To Send a Private Message:
- Double click the name of the person that you would like to chat with in the right window pane. This should open a private message box to speak one on one.
*If you have a question, you can either make it public psychology chat or you can ask “who here is a TA” and open a private chat with them. If you want to be more specific, “who here is a TA for PsyXXXX”.
