Nearly 7 of 10 veterans will seek care via their community health care providers. This workshop will benefit doctors, nurses, social workers, psychologist, counselors, teachers, community leaders and human service organizations in delivery of services to veterans and their families
Speakers
Dr Clyde Markon, MD, COL, USAR, Civil Affairs and Medical Director, Twin Ports VA OPC . TBI issues as a result of blast injures, common medical problems for returning Veterans and the effects of these problems on parenting and families will be reviewed.
Jeff Hall, MSW, LCSW, MAJ (Ret), VA Rural Outreach Coordinator for Returning Veterans.
A statistical overview, including description of deployment stages with the corresponding effects of those stages on the family, and services available to Veterans will be provided.
Kathy Dowell, Ph.D, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychology. University of Minnesota Duluth.
Emotional and behavioral effects of trauma, stress, and prolonged parental absence will be discussed throughout the developmental stages, including recommendations for when professional mental health consultation may be helpful and implications for academic performance.

The first community connections meeting to foster collaborations between university faculty and community professionals around the issues of healthy child and family development and community support was held on Friday Feb 2, 2007.
After Dr. Marta Erickson's keynote address “Raising Resilient Children in a Risky World: A Call for University-Community Action”, professionals from 20+ community organizations discussed their work and possible venues for collaboration.
(Marti Erickson: director of the Harris Programs in the U of M’s Center for Early Education and Development and co-chair of the President’s Initiative on Children, Youth & Families. Dr. Erickson specializes in linking research, practice and policy in the areas of parent-child attachment, child abuse prevention, and children’s mental health.)
