1. Why was the curriculum changed?
We had a self-study and an evaluation by an external review team and we analyzed this evaluation information. In addition, we reexamined our mission statement as well as the APA (American Psychological Association) guidelines for undergraduate education. As a result, we decided to revise the curriculum to better reflect the current face of the field and to better prepare the students graduate study leading to advanced degrees in psychology or for paraprofessional positions requiring some application of research or human service delivery skills.
2. What is the difference between the old and new curriculum?
The two curricula overlap to a large extent but the new one has the following changes
- 52 rather than 59 credits
- the distribution of the required courses is different
- all students are admitted as pre-psychology majors and declare a psychology major if they
- had completed 24 credits
- have a cumulative GPA of 2.5
- had taken General Psychology
- to graduate, psychology majors need a 2.5 G.P.A. across all psychology courses.
- there is a new course (Psy 2003 Psychology as a Discipline and Profession)
3. Which curriculum do I follow?
- New high school and new (non-online) transfer students starting Fall 2007 follow the new on-campus curriculum.
- Current psychology students -> you can select either the old on-campus curriculum or the new on-campus curriculum depending on where you are in your program
NOTE: If you want to change and graduate under the new curriculum, complete the application to request a change.
- Current students from other departments transfering to Psychology -> you will first be admitted as a pre-psychology major. If you meet the requirements, you will be admitted to the major under the new on-campus curriculum unless you want to specifically request the old on-campus curriculum
- Current and new transfer students from partner community colleges and UM-Crookston -> follow the new online curriculum
- If you are currently a psychology major who is following the old on-campus or on-line curriculum you do NOT need to declare a major.
- If you are a new student OR a current student switching to the new curriculum, once you have met the three requirements described above in item 2, complete the application to major form.
