Al Willman Matches Alumni Scholarship Gifts

In 2006, a fund was created to provide a scholarship every year to a child or grandchild of a UMD alumna/us. It was Al Willman’s (’50 Education) dream, and three outstanding scholars have already benefited from those generous gifts. Now in 2011, Al Willman has a new dream! It is to fully endow the scholarship to ensure the legacy for UMD alumni for generations to come. Al has agreed to match, dollar-for-dollar, all gifts to the UMD Alumni Association Scholarship, up to a total of $5,000. Not only does that mean that each gift UMD receives has twice the value, but a match of the entire $5,000 will guarantee more scholarships to be awarded in the years ahead. Samantha Berg, the 2010-2011 Alumni Scholarship recipient, said the scholarship gave her the opportunity to network with alumni from UMD. “The very first alumni event that I attended allowed me to find a volunteer coaching position at Duluth East High School. The networking and leadership aspect of the scholarship is just as valuable, if not more so, than the funding.” UMD is grateful for the gifts alumni and donors have provided in the past to support this great university. Help fulfill Al’s dream. Every gift makes a difference – times two.

To donate online, please go to www.d.umn.edu/development/waystogive.html or mail your gift to University of Minnesota Duluth, CM 3854, PO Box 70870, St. Paul, MN 55110 and designate the gift to Fund 1138, UMD Alumni Assoc. Scholarship. For other ways to support this scholarship, contact Patty DeLano at 218-726-8829, 866-726-7164, email pdelano@d.umn.edu or visit the website: www.umdalumni.com.
