1957

Eugene Simon, after volunteering for many years, was elected a lifetime honorary member by the Fine Arts Singles, Ltd. He continues to serve on the governing board of the Czech-Slovak Club of Greater K.C. and as a secretary of the Talking Singles Social Club.

1960

Jack Sheeks recently retired from his position as marketing program manager at Broward Community College in Fort Lauderdale. Jack plans to spend more time at a vacation home in the North Carolina Mountains.

1966

Anita Swanson will retire this summer from the Northern Border Partners Natural Gas, where she held the position of Senior Gas Controller. Anita looks forward to returning to Duluth.

1968

Mark Gilsdorf retired in June 2006, after 33 years of flying for American Airlines. He also retired as a captain from the U.S. Naval Reserve.

Doris (Peterson) Holecek is currently the principal and second grade teacher of Concordia Lutheran School in Machesney Park, Ill.

1970

Greg Jannetta is recovering from recent hip surgery in Grass Valley, Calif. and hoping to visit the detachment this year.

1971

Will Haapala received the Water

Environment Federation Quarter Century Operator Award in 2002, recognizing 25 years of service. Will and his wife, Teri, enjoy their time in Detroit Lakes as well as Ely, Minn.

Linda (Peterson) Thomas retired after 34 years of service as a flight attendant for Western and Delta Airlines. She will be going to India for several months where her husband has a job with Spice Jet Airlines.

1972

Rick Mickelson was the 2006 recipient of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Excellence in Performance Award for professional academic staff. His numerous awards include honors from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, and the University Photographers Association of America.

1976

Chris Degernes has been appointed to deputy director with Alaska State Parks. She manages all park field operations for the park system.

Steven Korby was hired to serve as the labor relations specialist for the City of Duluth in February 2006, after spending 18 years as the executive director of the Lake Superior Area Labor Management Association, Inc.

1979

Gary Huusko was elected board chair by the members of the Northern Dakota County Chamber of Commerce, the largest regional chamber in Dakota County, representing nearly 600 businesses. Gary is a registered patent attorney and specializes in intellectual property law.

1980

Mark Erickson was promoted to port manager of Canadian National/DM&IR's Duluth Marine Terminal in January 2007.

Antoinette Moran, M.D. is division head of Pediatric Endocrinology, a professor of pediatrics, and a diabetes researcher at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.

1983

John Charnes has written a new book, Financial Modeling with Crystal Ball and Excel, which will be published in the Wiley Finance series. His book is scheduled to be in bookstores by March 2007.

Candace L. Dale was named "Super Lawyer" by Minnesota Law & Politics Magazine in 2006. Candace is a trial lawyer for Schwebel, Goetz, and Sieben, P.A. of Minneapolis, and this year marks the tenth consecutive year she has been named one of Minnesota's top attorneys.

1984

Anthony Kinkel was named Chancellor for the University of Arkansas and its community colleges in March 2005.

1985

Edgar Beaver and Cathy (Lyons) Beaver were married in August. Ed is a driver for Upper Lakes Foods in Cloquet and Cathy is an informational specialist for St. Louis County Social Services.

1987

Todd Fedora and Lisa (McLennan) Fedora, '96, both of Duluth, were married in March. Todd is vice president of commercial lending at M&I Bank in Duluth and Lisa is a psychologist at Northwood Children's Services.

Keather McLoone has worked in environmental and nutrition laboratories and commercial breweries making ales and lagers. She is currently working as an environmental consultant, which includes travel to remote areas of Alaska.

Kelly (Rerah) Paddock and Jim Paddock, ('82) are currently living in St. Paul, Minn., with their two children. Kelly is self-employed in sales with Aihu, Essentials for Healing. Aihu (Chinese for cherish and protect) is an anti-stress, healing skin care product line.

1988

Diane (Rynda) Drefcinski and Shane Drefcinski welcomed their new son, Benedict James Drefcinski, into their family in August 2006. He joins siblings Angela, David, Margaret, Clare, and John. Diane is a volunteer director and parent teacher of vacation bible school for the St. Mary Parish in Platteville, Wis.

Mark Holsten, '88 (BA Sociology and History) has recently been named the Department of Natural Resources Commissioner. He has served as deputy commissioner of DNR since 2003. Minnesota Governor Pawlenty said, "Mark Holsten has the experience, talent and know-how to build on the great work that has been accomplished over the last four years at DNR and to bring additional reform and accountability to the management of our great outdoors." Holsten served in the Minnesota House of Representatives for ten years, including as chair of the House Environmental & Natural Resources Finance Committee. As Deputy Commissioner, Holsten oversaw all legislative and budgetary functions for the agency. Holsten was a key leader on a number of outdoor and conservation initiatives including improved management of ATV trails to protect the environment, while preserving Minnesotans' ability to enjoy the outdoors; forest certification of more than four-million acres of state lands; and enhanced management of 1,380 public wildlife areas with 1.2 million acres of habitat, from prairies and wetlands to forests and swamps, for Minnesota's game and non-game wildlife species.

Diane (Galazen) Tobin and Kevin Tobin, both of Duluth, were married in May. Diane is the associate creative director at H.T. Klatzky & Associates in Duluth. Kevin works at Lakewalk Surgery Center.

1989

Michael Kuhns lives in the Haute Savoie region of France, near Geneva, with his wife and three children. He works for Hach Ultra Analytics in Switzerland as a strategic market manager.

Mark Sisson was appointed as a new agent for McKee and Andrews Insurance Agency in January 2006. Mark lives with his wife Debra in Hermantown, and they have two children. Debra works at UMD in the pharmacy program.

1991

Joel Boeder and his wife Maria Boeder,'94, along with sons Spencer and Jordan, welcomed Michaela Thelma Boeder into their family on October 13, 2005.

Suzanne (Draxten) Marquardt, MA '02, and Michael Marquardt, both of Duluth, were married in March. Suzanne is a math teacher for Duluth School District and Michael works for the Housing and Rede velopment Authority in Duluth.

Amy Rutledge, '91 (BS Communication) past recipient of the UMD Chancellor's Media Award and former anchor of KBJR Channel 3 has been

selected for the anchor team of the FOX 21 News half-hour nightly program. Rutledge has worked as an account manager at Duluth public relations and advertising firm WestmorelandFlint since May 2005. Rutledge also served two stints at KDLH, returning in 1997 from a Kalamazoo, Mich. television station. She is also a past member of the UMD Alumni Board.

Mark Schiffman '91 (BA Political Science) is a senior director at Himle Horner, a Twin Cities-based public affairs and public relations agency. He completed his MA in Public Administration from Hamline University two years ago and recently began his second term as the mayor of Waconia. Mark volunteers for a number of civil service positions including: Board of Directors, Minnesota Twins Community Fund; Executive Committee, Regional Council of Mayors; Board of Directors, Ridgeview Medical Center; Executive Committee, Metropolitan Council Land Use Advisory Committee and others. He is married and has three boys. Mark said, "My passion for political science and now public policy comes from my experiences in Duluth. Duluth had a profound affect on my life." Mark also thanked Political Science Professor Paul Sharp for the positive impact Sharp had on Mark's years at UMD.

1992

Ivan Manev, currently a professor of management in the Maine Business School, has been named the University of Maine's fourth Nicolas Salgo Professor of Business Administration. Ivan's teaching and research interests are business management, entrepreneurship, and international business.

1994

Dana Bjerke was honored with a New York Times Librarian Award for 2006. Dana is a children's librarian at the Ridgedale Library in Minnetonka. She was one of the more than 1,300 nominees and the second librarian to win from Minnesota.

Michelle (Stoffel) Blanck and Stephen Blanck were married in January. Michelle is a training coordinator at the Domestic Abuse Intervention Project and Praxis International in Duluth. Stephen is a driver for the U.S. Food Service.

Mary (Graves) Elsenrath and Daniel Elsenrath, both of Duluth, were married in October. Mary is an accounting assistant for KBJR-TV and Daniel is the chief photographer for KBJR-TV in Duluth.

1995

Erick Anderson and Deanna (Schmidt) Anderson, both of Duluth, were married in June 2006. Erick owns Pure Chiropractic in Duluth and Deanna is an interior designer.

David Lokke and Alicia (Ridley) Lokke, '99, both of Duluth, were married in March. David is a personal banker for Miller Hill Wells Fargo. Alicia is a realtor for Forefront Reality in Esko.

Cameron Seybolt is an attorney in the trusts and estates practice area for Fredrickson & Byron, P.A. in Minneapolis. He was recently elected as a shareholder of the firm. Cameron lives in Wayzata with his wife, Katie, and their four children: Jack, Max, Eddie, and Lauren.

Billie Jo Kruse Steen, MA '97, recently completed her education administration license at St. Cloud State University and was appointed Barnum High School principal in August 2006. Billie Jo resides in Sturgeon Lake with her husband, Pete, and children: Emma, Benjamin, and Joseph.

Jen (Prokott) Sullivan married Rich Sullivan in 2002 and their son, Micah Sullivan, was born in October 2004. She is currently working for RTW, Inc. as an underwriter.

1996

Jonathan Herzog was awarded the Gold Medal Award for Personal and Professional Excellence for his work with a U.S. government team that negotiated an innovative bilateral trade agreement between the United States and Mexico. The Gold Medal Award is the highest honorary award given by the U.S. Department of Commerce for distinguished performance characterized by extraordinary, notable, or prestigious contributions.

Bryan Hiveley and Heidi Jensen,'97, currently reside in Klamath, Calif. Bryan recently traveled to Kenya and used his experience in ceramic arts to assist the Akamba people in using alternative building techniques. Heidi left law enforcement and is now a researcher on the Botox team for Allergan, Inc.

Maria Vuldjeva is a program coordinator at the UMD International Education Office where she works with students going abroad, helping them expand their minds and enhance their education by introducing them to meaningful cultural and academic experiences.

1997

Tanner McKenna, D.D.S., recently completed four years of U.S. Navy active duty service and has opened a private dental practice in Madison, Wis.

1998

Andrew Hubley and Cameron (Herrity) Hubley, '05, both of Duluth, were married in April 2005. Andy is a senior transportation planner for Arrowhead Regional Development Commission in Duluth and Cameron is a nanny.

Ryan Offersen and Mindy (Engseth) Offersen, both of Duluth, were married in October. Ryan works for United Products in Duluth and Mindy is a veterinary technician.

Zachary Spengler is currently the traffic and transportation manager at Steeler, Inc. in Seattle, Wa.

1999

Courtney (Harris) Anderson and Dale Anderson, both of Two Harbors, were married in April. Courtney is a claims examiner for First Plan of Minnesota and Dale is an emergency medical technician for Two Harbors Ambulance.

Kari (Rasmussen) Beutz and Dan Beutz were married December 2006 in Richfield, Minn.

Annika (Alcorn) Curren and Shawn Curren were married in St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands in May 2006. They currently reside in Charlotte, N.C.

Mark Holmes MS '99 is the water resources director for the Town of Chino Valley, Ariz.

Jeff Markes and Susan (Hargreaves) Markes, '01, were married in April 2005 and had a daughter, Claire Markes, in August 2006. The family currently lives in Eau Claire, Wis.

2000

Tara (Olson) Alfonsi and Craig Alfonsi, '01, married in August 2006 in the Rose Garden in Duluth. Tara is an advertising copywriter with H.T. Klatzky & Associates in Duluth. Craig is an information systems technician with Lake County.

Shandyn (Anderson) Benson and Steven Benson, both of Cottage Grove, were married in August. Shandyn is a social studies teacher for St. Paul Public Schools. Steven is a fleet and properties accountant for CHS Inc. in Inver Grove Heights.

Maria Besonen has been hired as a senior art director/graphic designer with Target Corp. She has relocated back to Minneapolis, Minn., after working at Sony Music in Santa Monica, CA. Previously she was working in New York City developing mark, a youth cosmetic brand by Avon.

Kristen (Solomon) Brockberg and Eric Brockberg, both of Brandon, South Dakota, were married in December. Kristen is the classroom director for Sylvan Learning Center in Sioux Falls. Eric isa financial consultant.

Michael Browers and his wife, Elnara, celebrated the birth of their daughter, Sophia. Michael has been nationally and internationally credited for his work creating fonts. He has published eight fonts at Myfonts type distributor.

Leslie (Hoffman) Bucar and Frank Bucar were married August 4, 2006. Leslie is a science teacher at the Fond du Lac Ojibwe School. They currently reside in Duluth.

Joseph Esler served in 42 combat missions in Iraq during summer 2004 as a captain and weapons officer instructor.

Joshua Kampbell and Allison (Fraser) Kampbell, both of Bloomington, were married in July. Joshua is a financial advisor for Savanna Financial Group in Burnsville. Allison is an environmental scientist.

Christopher West and Stephanie (Gaidis) West, both of Minnetonka, were married in May. Chris is an insurance agent for United Health Care in Edina. Stephanie graduated this year with a doctorate in chiropractic health.

2001

Adam Hummel premiered his new play, Fooling the Beard, at the Sieur Du Luth Summer Arts Festival in Summer 2006. Adamcontinues to live in Chicago, where he divides his time between acting and writing.

Megan Loppnow and Eric McPhee, '02, and their son, Alexander, announce the birth of Zakary Lee McPhee on June 8, 2006. Megan works at WDIO-TV in Duluth as the creative services graphic designer. Eric works at Sportman's Connection in Superior as the Geographic Information Systems specialist.

Jenny (Kilkus) Skrenes and Andy Skrenes were married in October 2006. The couple spent a week in Puerto Vallarta and now reside in Verona, Wis.

2002

Suzanne (Sheda) Berger and Jason Berger, both of Cloquet, were married in December. Suzanne is a preschool teacher for the Superior School District and Jason is a letter carrier for the U.S.Postal Service in Cloquet.

Ann Marie Brown completed the physician assistant (PA) program at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. in 2004. She moved back to Minnesota and is now working as a PA for Park Nicollet Clinic in Burnsville.

Jessica (Brede) Fabb and Garry Fabb were married in August. Jessica is a kindergarten teacher at Johanna Primary School, London, U.K., and Garry is a computer engineer.

Ethan Fisher and Heather (Dolan) Fisher, both of Duluth, were married in August. Ethan is a social studies teacher at Duluth Central High School and Heather is an industrial engineer.

Kyle Frase and Nicole (Haywood) Frase, were married in January 2004 and had their first child, Keaten Marcus, in June 2006. Kyle works as a Credit Analyst at YieldQuest Advisors in Atlanta, Ga., and Nicole works as an EIP teacher in Riverdale, Ga.

Katherine (Anderson) Lahti and Shawn Lahti were married in June. Katherine is a project administrative assistant at Barr Engineering in Hibbing, Minn., Shawn is owner and operator of Lahti Farms.

Andy Reierson, a defenseman for the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks, appeared in six games during the Duck's 2003 season and 12 games during their 2004 season.

Alison (Jorgensen) Schroeder and Tyson Schroeder, both of St. Joseph, Minn., were married in November. Alison is a regional sales planner for UniqueScreen Media. Tyler is a graphic designer for UniqueScreen Media, as well.

Angie (Halgren) Sullivan was married to Ryan Sullivan in June.She is the stepmother of a six-year-old boy, and is working as a Clinical Study Coordinator at Medtronic in Shoreview, Minn.

2003

Eileen (Harris) Campbell married Robert Campbell in May, 2005. Eileen works at the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, Mankato office as a TMDL Modeling Technician.

Katie (Pietrini) Harley, MA '05, and William Harley, both of Virginia, were married in April. Katie is a licensed graduate social worker for Range Mental Health Center and William works at Mittal Steel USA Minorca Mine.

Regan Kohler teaches tap dance for a studio in Rice Lake, Wis., and in his hometown Spooner, Wis. Kohler is a reporter for the Washburn County Register .

Kathryn (Mollison) Netzel and Brian Netzel, MA '05, were married in June 2005. Kathryn is a wedding consultant for David's Bridal. Brian is a senior researcher for the Mayo Clinic in Rochester.

Derek Nyberg is currently working for a biological pharmaceutical company, PDL Biopharma. He is also working on his master's in biological science from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.

2004

Sean P. Garrity and Karen (Lee) Garrity were married in May. Currently they are both employed at Medtox Laboratories in Saint Paul, Minn. Karen works as a technician in the Clinical Screens and Comprehensive Toxicology laboratory. Sean works as a technician in the Clinical Liquid Chromatography laboratory.

Stephanie (Hughley) Gillman and Casey Gillman, both of Duluth, were married in August. Stephanie is a fourth-grade teacher at Holy Rosary School in Duluth. Casey is the operations manager for Bachand Estates in Superior.

Nicole (Cowell) Olson and Zachary Olson, both of St. Paul, were married in June 2006. Nicole is a teacher at Oakhill Montessori in Shoreview and Zack is a Mac specialist for Apple Computers in Bloomington.

Brian Volkmann, MA, recently joined the Southern St. Louis County Social Services Initial Intervention Unit.

Dave Vukelich, MA, recently joined Southern St. Louis County Social Services. Dave previously worked with the homeless population in Duluth and also spent time working with child protection in England.

2005

Kelley (Skoglund) Bayuk and Nikolas Bayuk, both of Duluth, were married in November. Kelley is a financial analyst for Minnesota Power in Duluth and Nikolas is a warehouse associate at HOM furniture.

Carolyn (Tarvers) Blais and Jason Blais, both of Duluth, were married in August. Carolyn is a residential program supervisor for Trillium Services in Duluth.

Josh Dark, and Heather Hamilton, (MS '06), celebrated the birth of their son, Jonas Hamilton Dark.

Isaac Kasper and Jessica (Bjorlin) Kasper, both of Adana, Turkey, were married in February. Isaac is the lead youth program coordinator at Incirlik Air Base Youth Center. Jessica is a finance officer at Incirlik Air Base and is a second lieutenant in the Air Force.

Lisa (Maniak) Kittelson and Brian Kittelson were married in August 2006, in Duluth. Lisa is an academic advisor for the College of Education & Human Service Professions at UMD and Brian is a double agent for the Best Buy Geeksquad.

Elizabeth Mathias is currently serving as high school science teacher at Crazy Horse School in Wanblee, S.D., on the Pine Ridge Reservation. She's part of the 'Teach for America' program.

Jason McDevitt and Elizabeth (Strom) McDevitt were married in January. Jason is a senior loan officer at Provident Mortgage in Bloomington.

John Sandberg and Beth Holbrook, '06, were married in Duluth in May.

2006

Silka Werness is the stage management intern for Dracula at the Actors Theater of Louisville.

Heather (Skadsberg) Wyman and Andrew Wyman were married in June. Heather is a youth treatment specialist at Woodland Hills in Duluth and Andrew is a carpenter and general contractor.
