Dr. Leonard F. Wheat, Alexandria, Va., has published his seventh scholarly book, Hegel's Undiscovered Thesis-Antithesis-Synthesis Dialectics: What Only Marx and Tillich Understood.


1962 »

Richard A. Ekholm, Jupiter, Fla., has retired from United Airlines after 32 years as a pilot. He also holds a United States Coast Guard yacht captain license and still sails, operating out of South Florida.

Kenneth R. Korhonen, Ramona, Calif., has retired from the United States Navy after 21 years of service.

Dr. Rodney G. Schofield, Buena Vista, Colo., and his wife, Sharon (Anderson) Schofield, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Sept. 7, 2013, in Ferndale, Wash. Rod was vice president of the Class of 1962 and serves as a consultant to a private school system and institutions in the Palestinian Territories.

Fred T. Friedman, Duluth, Minn., is a longtime Northeastern Minnesota chief public defender and was honored for his work on behalf of the indigent in a ceremony at the Town and Country Club in St. Paul. The Minnesota Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers presented Friedman with its Distinguished Service Award.

Michael A. Hatch, Minneapolis, Minn., has been named the recipient of the "Joan and Walter Mondale Award for Public Service," given by the Minnesota Democratic Farmer Labor (DFL) Party. Following his career as Minnesota attorney general, Mike has been a practicing attorney at the Minneapolis firm of Blackwell Burke P. A. since 2007.

Douglas A. Benson, Bloomington, Minn., recently retired as the supervisor for Financial and Technical Assistance Programs for the Minnesota Department of Health. His retirement follows many years as a college teaching and research faculty member in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois. In addition he worked for over 15 years in community planning and development at the local, state, and federal government levels.

Dr. Richard R. Roach, MED '76, Kalamazoo, Mich., is currently an assistant professor of internal medicine at Western Michigan School of Medicine in Kalamazoo. Richard recently contributed as an editor of Tropical Pediatrics: A Public Health Concern of International Proportions. Published in 2012, the book highlights selective concepts of tropical pediatrics that are of importance to clinicians caring for children and adolescents with disorders usually found in subtropical and tropical areas of the world.

Dr. Bruce L. Smith, San Marcos, Tex., retired from his position as director of the School of Journalism & Mass Communication at Texas State University Southwest to become a full- time professor there. Bruce also co-authored the third edition of a textbook: Engaging Public Relations: A Creative Planning Approach.

Patrick A. Folman, Minneapolis, Minn., is enjoying an early retirement after 16 years of teaching for the Saint Paul Public School District.

1981 »

Elaine A. Romano, Duluth, Minn., is an electronic medical record processing clerk for Essentia Health. Elaine is also a member of Northland Skywarn, part of a national network of Skywarn Spotters for severe weather alerts.

Diane C. (Bergman) Bodin-Link, Duluth, Minn., is the owner and founder of The Edge Pilates Studio, which she established in 2004. Diane is also serving her second year as chair of the Miller Dwan Foundation Board, making this her ninth year as a board member.

1990 »

Dennis E. Nelson, Duluth, Minn., accepted a position with Duluth-based CW Technology as a virtual chief information officer. Dennis assists in building and developing information technology infrastructure as well as planning long-term technology goals, budgets, and execution of those plans.

Joyce J. (Siegel) Peppin, Rogers, Minn., was reelected to her fifth term as state representative in the Minnesota House of Representatives. She serves as the lead Republican on the Government Operations Committee, as well as on the Tax and Rules Committees.

Sharyl A. Samargia, MA '95, River Falls, Wisc., earned a PhD in rehabilitation science from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities in July 2012. Her doctoral dissertation research investigated neuroplasticity in laryngeal dystonia using a noninvasive brain stimulation technique. She has been an assistant
professor in the Department of Communicative Disorders at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls since 2003.

Jeffrey A. Hilgert, Olivia, Minn., wrote a book that will be published this August entitled Hazard or Hardship: Crafting Global Norms on the Right to Refuse Unsafe Work. Jeffrey is currently an assistant professor in the School of Industrial Relations at the University of Montreal.

Cheryl R. Reitan, MA, MLS '03, Duluth, Minn., has a new book out about the civil rights movement called Thunder of Freedom: Black Leadership and the Transformation of 1960s Mississippi by Sue Sojourner with Cheryl Reitan. It was published by the University Press of Kentucky in January 2013. Cheryl is the associate director of External Affairs for the University of Minnesota Duluth.

Erica S. (Berguson) Danielski, Duluth, Minn., became the director of integrated marketing for Amsoil Inc., in December 2012.

Jason M. Morrison and Tara L. (Netland) Morrison,'03, Murdock, Minn., welcomed a new son, Reid Henry, on March 13 this year. Jason works for Ridgewater College in Willmar, Minn., as a Check and Connect coach while Tara works as a Head Start Program area manager for Tri-Valley Opportunity Council, Inc. She is also a staff affiliate for the National Migrant and Seasonal Head Start Association.

Peter W. Dawson, Saint Louis Park, Minn., works as a deputy officer for the Hennepin County Sheriff's Department.

LeAnne M. Downey, Burnsville, Minn., received a master's degree in public policy and leadership earlier this year from the University of Saint Thomas and currently works as a risk management consultant for Wells Fargo.

Christiana D. Kapsner,Duluth, Minn., was named the assistant alumni director at the University of Minnesota Duluth.

Adam T. Lang, Duluth, Minn., has been named director of human resources at Halvor Lines, Inc., in Superior, Wisc.

Scott T. Dawson, Austin, Tex., is the vice president of First Trust Portfolios based in Chicago.

June A. (Spuzak) Atkinson, MSW, Cass Lake, Minn., participated in a Holy Land Study Tour to Israel last April with a group of 11 others from Minnesota, North Dakota, and Canada.

Alexander L. Bush and Lindsay M. (Kastenmeier) Bush, Minnetonka, Minn., married in January 2013 and Alex recently passed the March 2013 Certified Financial Planning certification examination.

Julie A. Palakovich Carr, MS, Rockville, Md., is running for Rockville City Council.

Dr. David R. Salo, Embarrass, Minn., is the 2013 recipient of the Minnesota Society of Health-System Pharmacists (MSHP) Rising Star New Practitioner Award. This award is presented to a newly licensed health-system pharmacist practitioner in recognition of outstanding performance and enthusiasm for the profession as well as active involvement in the MSHP.

Craig L. Brown, Minneapolis, Minn., recently accepted a position coaching boys' lacrosse for The Blake School in Minneapolis. He's also a coach for the Team Minnesota U11 program.

Ryan L. Hanson, Duluth, Minn., is the new digital seller for Townsquare Media.

Adam D. Wilson, Brooklyn, N.Y., is co-owner and partner with his brother, Ben Wilson, for Windmill Film Studio in Williamsburg, N.Y.

Amanda M. Olinger, Mankato, Minn., completed her master's degree from Des Moines University to become a physician assistant in May 2013. She recently accepted a job to work in family medicine with Essentia Health Superior Clinic.

Paul M. Kimpling, Duluth, Minn., became an environmental specialist for the Duluth office of MSA (Mid-State Associates) Professional Services.

Karissa B. (Kreuzer) Gehring, Minnetonka, Minn., is co-founder of the nonprofit Vega Productions. The company's mission is to advocate for support and provide children and youth across Minnesota with equal access to quality music and art education.

Emily P. Haavik, Duluth, Minn., has been hired as copywriter at SwimCreative, a creative, marketing, and web development firm in Duluth.

Ashlee A. Hartwig, Duluth, Minn., works as the communications associate in the Alumni Relations office at the University of Minnesota Duluth.

Alaina C. Johnson, Rosemount, Minn., served at an elementary school as a literacy tutor for Minnesota Reading Corps for the 2012–13 school year.

Jeffrey P. Klenner, Pierre, S.D., currently is a geologist and environmental scientist for the State of South Dakota Minerals and Mining, Oil and Gas section, a part of the South Dakota Department of Environmental and Natural Resources.

Mollie M. Nelson, Rice Lake, Wisc., recently accepted a position as director of marketing at the Duluth Area Family YMCA.
