UMD Alumni President Michael Dean

LETTER FROM THE UMD
ALUMNI PRESIDENT

Dear Alumni and Friends,

The spirit of UMD is vibrant and dynamic! In my years on the Alumni Association Board of Directors, I have had the chance to talk many, many alumni and they confirm my belief: we graduated from a "great university on a great lake" and we are proud to be part of its future. From the youngest alums to the oldest, every encounter has been interesting, enlightening, and just plain fun. You are a terrific group.

This year, as president of the Alumni Association Board, I am committed to strengthening UMD's alliances with alumni and connecting with more alumni than ever before. The alumni board is interested in having a presence at more activities in the coming year, so if you know of an event, or if you would like to get involved in one of the existing events, don't hesitate to contact me or the Alumni Office.

By now, you've probably seen the Alumni web page www.d.umn.edu/alumni.   Here you will find the alumni directory, calendar of events, Duluth weather, the alumni scrapbook and links to tickets, KUMD-FM radio and UMD products. You also probably know about the new monthly e-mail publication, UMDView, edited by UMD's Susan Beasy Latto. If you don't get UMDView and would like to, just email the Alumni Office and we will sign you up.   UMD has launched a new service, the Alumni OnLine Directory. You can search for friends and make new connections directly from the UMD alumni web page, www.d.umn.edu/alumni.   Membership is exclusive and free to alumni only. Only the information that you designate will be shared.   FREE personalized and permanent email forwarding is available to all UMD alumni.   Your name@UMDalumni.com will identify your UMD connection.

This issue of the Bridge marks another new venture. For the first time, we have accepted corporate sponsorship. The benefit to you is that we will now have the funds to send you three issues of the Bridge (Winter, Spring and Summer). The benefit to UMD is that while other universities have had to make budget cuts in alumni communication, we are able to expand.

Our alumni events are lots of fun.   Here is what's happening: the UMD Alumni Hockey Reception at the UM McNamara Center on January 29, Colorado Bulldog Reception in Denver on February 18, Duluth Break The Ice Alumni Reception in Duluth on March 5, Summit Brewery Alumni Reception on April 22, and, of course, Homecoming on October 7 and 8.   Mark your calendars and join us. We are indeed a lucky group of people to have many opportunities to revisit fond memories together.

In closing, I'd like to say that I am personally proud of YOU for your dedication to UMD. It is my goal to help you stay connected with UMD and each other.   I look forward to seeing you and thank you for the honor of being your president.

Michael Dean
