Margaret F. Patskowski, 95, Duluth, MN, died in August, 1996. She taught 4th grade at Duluth's Emerson School from 1922 to 1930.

1925

Alice E. Westlund, 91, Minneapolis, died in April, 1996. She was a teacher for approximately 40 years, a member of the Minneapolis Chapter of AAUW, AARP, The American Swedish Institute and a lifelong member of the University of Minnesota Alumni Association.

1927

Lillian V. Wall DiMarco, Superior, WI, was a primary teacher for the Duluth School District for many years. She is currently a volunteer at Superior's Fairlawn Mansion and Museum.

1929

Margaret C. Strand Johnson is a homemaker and involved at the Asbury United Methodist Church. In her spare time, she enjoys music and playing bridge. She lives in Duluth, MN, with husband Claude.

1930

Dorothy A. Paul, a lifelong resident of Duluth, MN, died in September, 1996 at the age of 88. Miss Paul taught English for more than 35 years at Duluth East Junior High and at Duluth East High School. In addition to teaching English, she was also advisor to the school newspaper, which annually was awarded "All America" ratings.

1932

Dr. Martin O. Wallace, 88, a prominent Duluth physician who delivered over 5,500 babies, died in May, 1996. He served as president of the following: Duluth Rotary Club, Duluth City Council, Duluth Council of Churches, Duluth Surgical Society, St. Louis County Medical Society and the Minnesota Obstetrical and Gynecological Society. He was a member of First United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the American College of Surgeons, Northland Country Club and the Kitchi Gammi Club. He helped organize the University for Seniors at UMD, where he taught several courses.

1933

James A. Rowbottom, 90, Virginia, MN, died in April, 1996. He was a member of the Virginia Masonic Lodge 264 AF&AM for more than 50 years. He was a member of Hope Community Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder. He was a former member of the Virginia City Council, serving as council president and interim Virginia Mayor. He was also a former member of the Jaycees, earning its Distinguished Service Award.

1935

Robert M. Lenroot, 80, Algonquin, IL, died in July, 1996. He was a member of St. Lawrence Parish, its O.K. Club, the Knights of Columbus, Eagles, Moose, Lions and Scandinavian Americans Fraternity. He was also a member of the Duluth Chamber of Commerce, supporter of area 4-H Clubs, former president of St. Clement's Holy Name Society, and a member and past president of the St. Louis County Historical Society. He was instrumental in the formation of 10 Golden Age clubs in the Duluth area.

Dorothy C. McEwen, 84, Duluth, MN, died in September, 1996. She taught school in Wrenshall until 1940. She was a member of Glen Avon Presbyterian Church and UMD Faculty Wives. She was also a senior masters bridge player and belonged to several area bridge clubs.

1936

Margaret L. Anderson Osteyee, Eldred, NY, last served as a grade school teacher for the New York City Board of Education. She was a full lieutenant in the U.S.N.R. during WWII, and taught recognition of aircraft and gunnery to cadets. She lives with her husband, Kenneth, who is an alumnus of UMD.

1937

Lilyan K. Ilenda, 85, Duluth, MN, died in May, 1996. She was an accomplished artist, teaching art and elementary grades in Duluth area schools and Mentor, OH. She was an active member of the Audubon Society, the Gunflint Homeowners Association, and a supporter of the Gunflint Fire and Rescue Squad.

1939

Alma Tamminen, 80, Duluth, MN, died in May, 1996. For more than 20 years, she worked in the field of education. She taught high school and at Suomi College. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and its Wesleyan Circle and Friday Women's Study Group, as well as the Finnish American Bicentennial Chorus and Mother Singers.

1940

Ruth M. Bard Bakke is a retired Duluth school teacher who enjoys spending her time as a volunteer at Lutheran Home and Kids Closet. She also enjoys church work, AARP's, participating in Golden Age and other senior activities. She lives in Duluth, MN.

1943

Lois P. Rynning, North Little Rock, AK, is an oral communications instructor at Arkansas State University. Lois received her Masters in Education in 1971 from the University of Central Arkansas. She is active in her church, Arkansas Arts Center, NLR Women's Club, a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, and is still teaching at ASU-Beebe.

1946

Dorothy R. Ebel, 72, Elkader, IA, died in February, 1996. She taught high school French and English for 37 years in southern Minnesota and Elkader. She was an active member in Peace United Church of Christ, PEO, Retired Teachers Association, Four Oaks Country Club and a member of the Mayflower Descendants.

Lucille Teppen, 83, formerly of Duluth, MN, died in April, 1996. She taught at the Tuttle School in Minneapolis and the UMD Lab School. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Organization.

1948

E. Marcella Mansigh Johnson, Monmouth, OR, was an elementary school teacher and media specialist, mostly in Oregon, until 1986. She married Jacob Johnson in 1952 (deceased in 1987) and has four children and two grandchildren.

Ruby A. Patterson, 76, Hermantown, MN, died in February, 1996. She taught at Morgan Park High School and Denfeld High School for 15 years, retiring in the early 80's. She was a member of Our Savior's Evangelical Lutheran Church, where she was active in its Naomi Circle, was a former church secretary and Sunday school teacher. She had also been a bookkeeper for both Denfeld and Mount Royal Super Valu stores and a secretary of the Sons of Norway.

1949

Bernice L. Kriel Baumgartner, Minneapolis, MN, is a Title I educational assistant for the Richfield School District. In her spare time she enjoys playing in a kitchen band, singing in the church choir, sewing, reading, camping, doing needlework, and participating in U of M home extension study groups. She lives with her husband, William, a UMD alumnus.

Edward B. Grayden, Excelsior, MN, is the retired president of Grayden and Flemmer, Inc. He is currently on the Board of Directors of The Loft, a non profit writing school. In addition to UMD, he received his Masters Degree in Creative Writing from Hamline University in 1993.

1950

Emmett V. Johnson has been elected vice president of the Baptist World Alliance, representing 100 million people world wide. He lives in Moundsview, MN.

1951

Donald Manthey, 71, Hoyt Lakes, MN, died in January, 1996. He was founder and president of Gogebic Range Association for Retarded Children, Gogebic Range Choral Society, president of Hoyt Lakes Civic and Commerce Association and Hoyt Lakes Male Chorus. He was also a member of AARP and Hoyt Lakes VFW Post 8144.

Robert G. Roper is retired from School District No. 2, Billings, MT, as band and orchestra teacher. He enjoys playing in the Billings Symphony and the Billings Jazz Band. He has been Director of the Billings Community Band for five years and president of the Billings Studio Theater. He lives in Billings with his wife, Loismarie.

1952

Robert E. Leestamper, Waterloo, IA, has retired from the University of Northern Iowa at Cedar Falls as Assistant Vice President for International Programs. In August, 1996, he began working as a Fulbright Scholar in Hong Kong. He resides with his wife, Barbara.

Gerald Sicard, who has been teaching sociology at Miami-Dade Community College-North for 30 years, retired after the end of the 1996 summer session. Sicard's honors include an outstanding faculty award and a national award for teaching excellence. In his free time, Sicard enjoys reading, playing with computers and watching old movies.

1956

James R. Hanson is presently the vice president and part owner of In Touch Communications. He is involved in the Humane Society Board, Optimists and many other community organizations. In his free time he enjoys golfing, spending time with his family and traveling. He lives in Omaha, NE, with his wife, Sandra J. Knutson Hanson, UMD grad of 1959.

1957

Charles J. Jacobson was a certified rehabilitation counselor before his retirement. Currently he is involved with the UWS Alumni Association, the American Legion and the VFW. He lives in Superior, WI, with his wife, Beverly.

1958

Rev. Melvin L. Johnson is the associate director of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Foundation. He lives in Streamwood, IL.

Barbara L. Martin, 60, Proctor, MN, died in August, 1996. She was a school teacher in Duluth and Hibbing, MN, as well as in Redding, CA, for five years.

Geraldine Isabelle Mattson, 58, Duluth, MN, died in August, 1996. Following her medical technology degree from UMD, she earned a Master's in Psychology from The College of St. Scholastica and worked for the State Services for the Blind as a psychologist counselor.

1959

Mary Joe Lynch Holmes, St. Paul, MN, graduated with a degree in Social Work. She is currently involved in the Minneapolis Art Institute, Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts, church activities and other organizations. She enjoys downhill skiing, bridge, golf, aerobics and spending time with family and grandchildren. She lives with her husband, Raymond.

Margaret R. Kilpela, 58, Grand Rapids, MN, died in June, 1996. She taught school in Togo, Minneapolis, Robbinsdale and Grand Rapids. She was also principal at Squaw Lake School for several years. Memberships included:   the Eastern Star Chapter in Minneapolis and the Grand Rapids Chapter of the Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority.

Lawrence V. Oakes, Bemidji, MN, was a cashier and executive vice president of the First National Bank in Cass Lake, MN, for 23 years. He is now a managing partner in Cass Forest Products, Inc., a sawmill and wood manufacturing business in Cass Lake.

1961

"Buck" Anderson, Minnetonka, MN, retired after 35 years of teaching in the Duluth and Robbinsdale School Districts. He earned his degree in elementary education and served as a teacher of gifted/talented children.

Lorraine Larson Bissonett is a former librarian and instructor at UMD. She is currently involved in the Glen Avon Presbyterian Church, Friends of UMD Library, Duluth Women's Club, Friends of Duluth Public Library, UMD Women's Club and Hartley Environmental Center. She lives in Duluth, MN.

Gerald T. Fierek is president of Fierek and Associates, Inc., in Munster, IN. In his spare time, he enjoys sailing and antique cars. Gerald lives with his wife, Constance.

Peter D. Morgan, Victoria, British Columbia, is a retired banker and trust officer. He is involved in the Rotary Club and enjoys golfing, hiking, photography and video. He lives with his wife, Joy.

1962

Gary E. Glass, Duluth, MN, is an environmental scientist for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. He lives with his wife, Fayth.

1963

Dennis D. Brissett, 56, Duluth, MN, died in August, 1996. A Duluth resident since 1972, he taught at the UMD Medical School in the Department of Behavioral Science, retiring in 1995. He was a member of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary.

Alyce Pihlaja Kangas, Pine City, MN, is a retired school teacher. She taught school for 31 years. In her spare time, she enjoys going camping and traveling with her husband, Kenneth.

James A. Sandelin, Slidell, CA, is a self-employed international consultant. He recently retired from the position of a compliance officer with the Food and Drug Administration. He continues his second career as an international consultant in food quality assurance.

1964

Laura Kykyri Jalonen died in May, 1996 at the age of 80. She taught English at the Palo School for several years before taking employment with St. Louis County Social Services as a social worker. She was active in senior citizen issues and the DFL party. She was also a member of the Grace Lutheran Church and resided in Ely, MN, during her retirement years.

Barbara Hargest Korpela is administrator of the Chris Jensen Nursing Home, Duluth, MN. She is certified and a fellow/charter life member of the American College of Health Care Administrations. She lives with her husband, Dennis, in Carlton, MN.

Dr. Taimi M. Ranta, 79, died in December,1995, after a brief illness. She was an internationally known specialist in the fields of literature for children and young adults, as well as English curriculum. She was also a distinguished faculty member of Illinois State University and well-known for her interest and scholarship in Finnish Studies of Language, Literature and Folklore. During her career, Dr. Ranta received numerous awards for excellence in her fields of expertise.

1965

Frank C. Green is the vice president of corporate audit for the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad. He lives in South Barrington, IL, with his wife, Patricia. Currently, he is a Board member of the James J. Hill Library and involved in Rotary activities.

Ronald E. Jugasek, 54, Rice Lake, MN, died in October, 1996. He was an accountant for U.S. Steel's Duluth Works and worked in construction for the AFL-CIO. He belonged to the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Proctor, and was a former member of the Proctor Moose.

Orrin A. Mangseth, 54, Eagle River, WI, died in February, 1996. He taught at Northland Pines High School of Eagle River for more than 30 years. In addition, he developed and coached hockey at Northland Pines, was a member of ERRA, served as the director of a summer hockey program for 13 years and was an active Eagle River sports booster.

Roberta "Bobbi" Schmidt, St. Paul, MN, graduated in May 1996 with her Master of Music in Organ Performance from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. She is currently working for North St. Paul-Maplewood-Oakdale Schools.

1966

Ruby L. Dincau Drew, Ashville, NC, earned a Ph.D. in Communication Disorders: Speech-Language Pathology from Northwestern University in June, 1996. She currently is a professor at East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, TN.

Paul K. Sleeman, 51, Virginia, MN, died in March, 1996. He taught in the Kewaunee and Tomahawk, WI, school system. From 1977 on, he was a public health educator for St. Louis County. He was a member of United Methodist Church in Virginia, coached youth hockey, was a six year member of the Iron Range Rehabilitation Center, a Board member of the American Lung Association of Minnesota and involved in many other organizations and community activities.

Roy W. Tuomi, 55, Scandia, MN, died in May, 1996. He served in the Army and National Guard for 30 years and worked at the state capitol for more than 25 years as a computer analyst.

William Whitely is a professor of human resources management at the University of Oklahoma and guest professor of industrial psychology at the University of Gent, Belgium. He retired from the Navy in 1995 after over 39 years of service. He lives in Normana, OK, during the academic year and Gent, Belgium and Symi, the Greek Islands during the summer when he is on sabbatical.

1967

Marilyn C. Gunlaugson, Minneapolis, MN, is office manager in the Tech/Sci/Gov/Doc's Dept. for the Minneapolis Public Library. She is involved in many community activities, including reading for the blind and as a member of the Plymouth Congregational Church. In her spare time she enjoys music, reading, art, dance, theater and sewing.

Thomas J. Patka, a partner in the Tampa office of Holland & Knight, has been appointed co-chair of the seven-member Brownfields Statute Committee of the Southern Environmental Business Council. The council is an organization of professional environmental businesses throughout the southern United States that addresses issues affecting public health and the environment.

1968

Karen Christiansen Stocke, Duluth, MN, is the founder and owner of Senior Friend Associates, a private home care agency. She is married with two sons, the oldest of whom recently graduated from UMD.

Robert James Wilcox, 53, Duluth, MN, died in May, 1996. He was an electrical engineer for Minnesota Power from 1964 -1981 and self employed after that. He was a member of the Drifttoppers Snowmobile Club and the American Rifle Association.

1969

Wayne C. Benson, is a guidance counselor for the Department of Defense. In his spare time, he enjoys camping and fishing. He lives in Great Falls, MT, with his wife, Linda.

Martha Bylkas, Esko, MN, received her first degree -- a life certificate to teach from Northern State Teachers College of Marquette, MI, in 1929.

Mary Ellen Sandstedt Hanson is a first grade teacher at Gateway Magnet School in Ft. Myers, FL. She lives with her husband, Paul Hanson'68, in Ft. Myers.  

Jillayne D. Haller Maertz, 50, Eden Prairie, MN, died in September, 1996. She taught in Flint, MI, and in junior high schools in Minneapolis.

Laura E. Carlberg McArdle is a sales manager at Hudson Furniture, Helena, MT. She lives in Helena with husband, Terry, and is actively involved with the Helena Chamber of Commerce and other community organizations.

Terry J. McArdle is the president of Townsend Marine, Helena, MT. He is involved with Ducks Unlimited and Walleyes Unlimited. He lives in Helena with his wife, Laura.

1970

Stephen A. English, President & CEO of The Trust Company of Kansas, was elected as a co-chair of the Mid-West Independent Trust Council at its annual meeting. The council promotes the unique role of its members in the asset management and financial planning process on their clients.

Richard D. Lindgren is a science teacher and tennis coach at the Dawson County High School, Glendive, MT. He has been teaching for 26 years. Mr. Lindgren is a member of the Tennis Association, an insurance adjuster and involved in intramural sports activities. He was the National Coach of the Year-1995 for Girls Tennis, and was elected to the Montana State Coaches Hall of Fame in 1996. He lives in Glendive with his wife, Bonnie.

Barbara Jane Senich, Hopkins, MN, is a elementary school teacher for the Hopkins School District #270. In her spare time, she enjoys marathons and golf tournaments, music, plays, travel and classes.

1971

Mary Jo Parker Jepson teaches at Monticello High School, Monticello, MN, in an integrated, community focused, thematic program called Connect-4. She lives in Monticello with her husband and their two daughters.

1972

Ramon Sanchez, Essex, CA, is a park interpretive specialist for the California Department of Recreation and Parks, Providence Mountains State Recreation Area. Ramon worked as a National Park Ranger in four different parks from 1989-1995.

1973

Nancy R. Anderson Bartsch is a speech therapist at Billings Public Schools. In her spare time, she enjoys the outdoors, traveling, skiing and camping. She is also involved in church activities. She lives in Billings, MT, with her husband, Richard, who also graduated from UMD in 1973.

Richard A. Bartsch is a school psychologist at the Billings (MT) Public Schools. In his spare time, he enjoys camping, skiing and traveling. He is also involved in the Billings Symphony and Chorale and the Billings Aquatic Club. He lives in Billings with his wife, Nancy.

Gerald W. Hayes Jr., 49, Duluth, MN, died in September, 1996. He was a coordinator for Duluth Community Schools and, for the last 13 years, financial coordinator for the Duluth Community Health Center. Mr. Hayes was a radioman second class in the Navy on the USS Mazama. His decorations included the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Metal with two bronze stars and Republic of Vietnam Medal.

1974

Jineen E. Krogstad Heiman, Libertyville, IL, is a self-employed private music and language teacher. In her spare time she enjoys involvement in church, pre-classical music, herb gardening, embroidery and other handwork. She lives in Libertyville with her husband, Daniel.

John W. "Flash" Patterson, 47, Duluth, MN, died in September, 1996. He formerly owned Shel-Don Printing Company. He was a member of Glen Avon Masonic Lodge 306, Scottish Rite Bodies of Duluth, Aad Temple Shrine, Moose 1302, Elks Lodge 133 and UCT Zenith Council 40. He was also a member of Hermantown Chamber of Commerce.

1976

Barbara Jean Hann, Bloomington, MN, is the food service director at Independent School District #16, Spring Lake Park, MN. She graduated from UMD with a degree in Home Economics.

Robert D. Howe, Duluth, MN, a certified employee benefits specialist, was named trust administrator at North Shore Bank of Commerce. He is managing North Shore Bank's growing benefits administration program. He is a past officer for the Bank Administrative Institute, and volunteers for United Way and the Duluth Lion's Club.

Steven C. Korby, Cloquet, MN, has served as the Executive Director of Lake Superior Area Labor-Management Association, Inc., since 1988. LSALMA was selected to be a presenter at the 8th National Labor Management Conference in Chicago in May, 1996. LSALMA has been recognized for its outstanding leadership and support of labor and management cooperative efforts in NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin.

1977

Constance R. Barnhart, Ft. Lauderdale, FL, has joined the law offices of Holland & Knight as a partner. She will continue her practice in the areas of international corporate law and business transactions, servicing clients out of both the Miami and Ft. Lauderdale offices. She has been a frequent lecturer at legal and business organizations on topics relating to legal issues in international business transactions.

1978

Frank Colligan, San Francisco, CA, is a senior technical writer of financial applications for the Oracle Corporation. He received his accounting degree from UMD.

Mami Nakamura, Toyko, Japan, is currently an independent conference interpreter, as well as a business coordinator. Mami worked in European manufacturing companies operating in Toyko, then served Delegation of European Union and moved to Belgium in 1990.

Marsha Schwartz, St. Paul, MN, is an occupational therapist. She works in nursing homes throughout Minnesota, helping people learn to take care of themselves. She is also an active member in her synagogue. Marsha received her UMD degree in English/Spanish.

1980

James J. Ferkovich, MSW, CICSW, Butternut, WI, is now working as a hospice social worker following 20-plus years in out-patient mental health work. He has also begun his own social service consulting business. He resides on Butternut Lake with his wife, Jana. They enjoy spending their spare time with their two grand-daughters.

Melanie Goldish, Hoffman Estates, IL, is the author and publisher of a newly released book, How Was Your Day, Baby? A Childcare Journal for Working Parents. Ms. Goldish graduated from UMD with a degree in Speech Communications and is owner of Tracer Publishing. She is married to Joseph Yon and they have two young sons.

Dianne Richards Metsa, 39, Healy, AK, formerly of Virginia, MN, died in August, 1996. She received her bachelor's degree in business administration from UMD and obtained a master's degree in elementary education from St. Mary's College in Winona, MN. Ms. Metsa operated a child daycare business for 13 years. She was also a member of the Christ United Methodist Church in Rochester, MN.

Mark D. Peterson completed his doctorate in educational leadership at the University of Georgia. Dr. Peterson is the principal of Commerce Middle School in Commerce, GA.

1981

Jean Doran Matua, Milpitas, CA, is working at Stanford University as program coordinator for the Center for Musculoskeletal Disorders at Stanford, among many other activities. Anyone wanting a referral to a group of specialists for diseases/disorders of muscles and/or bones at Stanford can get things started by calling their toll-free number 1-888- 723-7001.

Elaine Romano, Duluth, MN, is working for Smith Barney, Inc. In her spare time, she attends UMD hockey games, city council meetings and sings in choirs. Ms. Romano received her UMD degree in English.

Mary M. Smith-Johnson, Superior, WI, is a teacher of deaf/hard-of-hearing students in the Duluth School District. She lives in Superior with her husband, Michael, and their two children. In her spare time she enjoys skating, biking and reading.

1982

Debbie Ortman, Hermantown, MN, is currently a city councilor, an environmental consultant with EAGLE and a co-coordinator for the Green Thumb Project, a Great Lakes pesticide reduction project.

Diane Briese Selleck, New Brighton, MN, recently earned a MBA with honors from the University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management. She is a human resource consultant for the St. Paul Companies, Inc. and lives in New Brighton with her husband, Randy.

Hon-Ming Yong, Singapore, is the chief investment strategist for Network Group, Inc. He recently started an affiliate in Chicago called Network Asia, Inc., to promote entrepreneurial activities and investments between the USA and Asia-Pacific.

1983

Mark P. Hanson, Ph.D., Minneapolis, MN, is in private practice as a licensed psychologist at River City Mental Health Clinic, working with adults, adolescents and couples.

Jerry Huber, Lindstrom, MN, was hired as the director of health and human services for Chisago County, the fifth fastest growing county in Minnesota. He has also had the opportunity to work on various issues related to health and human service reform on the federal, state and local   levels.

Bobbi Morris Kady, Minneapolis, MN, is the director of funding programs at Arts Midwest in Minneapolis. Sharing her home are husband Paul Kady, newborn son Jack and dog Zoe.

Laurel A. Muehlhausen, Kailua Kona, HI, lives on the big island of Hawaii and recently opened her own law practice. She also serves as the treasurer for the West Hawaii Bar Association.

Tom Porter, College Station, TX, earned a Ph.D. in animal physiology from the UM in 1988, married Pam Gerhardt in 1993 and joined the faculty of Texas A and M University as an assistant professor. His research is on pituitary cell differentiation during embryonic development. Last word from Tom was that he's desperately trying to move north!

Helen R. Smith Prekker, Duluth, MN, accepted the position of alumni director at UMD in May, 1996. Helen has over 12 years of professional development experience, most recently as director of development at WDSE-TV -- the PBS affiliate station in Duluth. She is currently pursuing a master of education in media and technology from the College of St. Scholastica, Duluth. In her spare time, she's an avid quilter.

1984

Rachel L. Sandbulte Ostrander, Duluth, MN, is a mortgage loan processor at Investors Mortgage, Duluth. She is actively involved in the Glen Avon Presbyterian Church. She lives in Duluth with her husband, Bruce, and their young children.

1985

Ernest (Chuck) Bylkas, III, received a master of theology degree from the Inter-Lutheran Theological Seminary in 1995. He was installed as associate pastor of the Apostolic Lutheran Church in Laurium, MI, in February, 1996.

Terry R. Dittmann, Lavaca, AR, is a furniture assembler for the Riverside Furniture Corporation, Fort Smith, AR. He was married in 1995 and has two children. He is continuing his education through Arkansas Tech, Russellville, AR, majoring in computer information science.

Anne T. Cotter Goddard and Stephen M. Goddard, Jr. have owned and operated a computer consulting business since 1989. Steve received his masters of science in computer science at the University of North Carolina and is currently working on his Ph.D. Anne finished her second major in studio arts, with a concentration in metals and jewelry, in May.

1986

Richard R. Davis, Duluth, MN, is a master sergeant and works full-time as the supervisor of the Plans and Implementation Section of the 148th Communications Flight of the Minnesota Air National Guard. He lives in Duluth with his wife, Michele, and their son, Alexander.

Beth Pykkonen Esselstrom, Duluth, MN, is the associate director at the UMD Office of Admissions. She received her bachelor's in communication from UMD.

Timothy J. Gottwalt, Lino Lakes, MN, is an architectural hardware consultant for Essex Industries. His UMD degree is in Economics/German. He lives in Lino Lakes with his wife and two children.

Toni Squires, St. Paul, MN, is celebrating her 10th anniversary of service to Concordia College. This event was acknowledged at a chapel service in the Graebner Memorial Chapel and at the annual faculty staff recognition dinner in May.

Timothy Vienneau recently relocated to Rosemount, MN, and is working as a computer specialist and webmaster with the Minnesota Department of Military Affairs. He is currently serving as the commander of D Company, 1st Bn, 94th Armor and M1 Tank Company in Grand Rapids, MN. In November he became an adjunct faculty member at Concordia College, St. Paul, and is teaching in the business department.

1987

Tony Dincau, Lafayette, LA, is a petroleum geologist for Chevron. He and his wife, Snez, have three young children. Tony works daily with a team of engineers at Chevron, and has had much success recently drilling and producing natural gas.

Sue Eld-Johnson, Bloomington, MN, recently began a new business, ELDesign, illustrating personalized pencil portrait birth announcements. At last writing, Sue and her husband, Paul, were expecting their second child in October.

Michele Gigliotti, Sunrise, FL, acquired a masters of sociology/ESOL in 1995 and is teaching advanced and gifted middle school English. She is also a freelance writer. And, she was teacher of the year in 1995!

Leah Kristin Grittner, Miami, FL, is currently teaching at "Escuela Bilingue Maquilishaut" in San Salvador, El Salvador.

Juli Kellner, Duluth, MN, is producing and hosting a documentary series on public television in Duluth, WDSE-TV. She is married to Lars Kuehnow and they have one child.

Sandra A. Betz Likely, Minneapolis, MN, is a teacher in the Minneapolis Public Schools. She is a member of the church choir, Neighborhood Association, Bancroff School PTA, and other community groups. In her spare time, she enjoys camping, traveling and vocal and instrumental music. She lives in Minneapolis with her husband, James.

Priscilla McDowell Swanson, Lino Lakes, MN, is a juvenile probation officer in Anoka County. She lives in Lino Lakes with her husband and their two children.

Gregory J. Tessier, Long Beach, CA, is a field operations manager conducting site investigations on Superfund and NPL hazardous waste sites. He is currently implementing Remedial Design Systems for the U.S. Air Force at Edward's Air Force Base in California.

Jon S. Thompson, Duluth, MN, played with an alternative band "The Pirates" until 1993. He then toured the Far East as a solo artist in 1994.

Shawn T. Foy, Ridgway, CO, is the general manager/vice president of the Telluride Super 8 Lodge.

Deborah Wolf Hawkinson, Lakeville, MN, works in customer service for General Mills. She married a Badger and really misses Duluth - except for winter!

Gary Maki, Little Canada, MN, is the director of human resources for a chain of Freedom Valu Centers, convenience stores based in Hudson, WI. He currently lives in Little Canada with his wife and three children.

Lisa J. Nebel, Brooklyn Park, MN, is a technical consultant for Metaphase Technology, Inc. She lives in Brooklyn Park with her husband, Michael.

Jennifer Henke Roy, Francestown, NH, is a special education aide in a first grade class. She lives in Francestown with her husband and their two children.

Mary Tomasiak, DePere, WI, is a teacher in the Green Bay Area Public Schools. Following graduation from UMD, Mary acquired a master of science in education from the University of Wisconsin - Oshkosh.

Jolene L'Allier and Hideki Tomioka, Los Angeles, CA, were married in 1990 and moved to Tokyo, Japan, where she taught ESL. While in Japan, they had a son, then moved back to Los Angles in 1992. They plan to return to Toyko in 1997.

1989

Mary Lou Harris Cash, Arvada, CO, is a part-time English instructor at Front Range Community College, Westminster, CO, and full-time mom. She lives in the metro Denver area with her husband and their 3 yr. old twin daughters.

Jill Feickert and Jeff Cronquist, So. St. Paul, MN, were married in August of 1994 . Jeff is a salesman for Timmons-Sheehan, a food brokerage. Jill is a fourth grade teacher in South St. Paul Public Schools. They live in So. St. Paul, MN, with their little girl, Hannah.

Brian A. Helmken, Plymouth, MN, is a commercial real estate broker in Minneapolis. He has been married for three years and lives with his wife in Plymouth.

1990

Marlene Diver, Duluth, MN, is coordinator of children's services for Equaysayway outpatient chemical treatment program. Ms. Diver was approved for state licensure as a child care director last June. She is working to establish a new on-site state licensed child care center to serve children of clients receiving treatment at Equaysayway.

Michelle M. Hummel, Superior, WI, is a senior planner at the Arrowhead Regional Development Commission in Duluth. Ms. Hummel received her bachelor's degree in political science from UMD.

Diane Juntti, Coon Rapids, MN, is an administrative assistant for NCA/ Assessment at Anoka-Hennepin Technical College, Minnesota State Colleges and Universities.

James D. Kuehn, Mary Esther, FL, is currently serving as an Air Force captain. He recently completed specialized undergraduate pilot training and is stationed at Hulburt Field in Florida as a special operations Pavehawk pilot. He has been married for five years to Cindi and they have two daughters.

Micki McClintock Larrabee, Coon Rapids, MN, is an early childhood special education teacher at the Anoka-Hennepin School District. She gave birth to a baby girl in January, 1996.

David A. Lein, Grand Rapids, MN, separated from the Air Force in May,1995 after four years of service as a missile launch officer. He is currently on extended vacation and preparing for a new career as a stock broker. While in the Air Force, he completed a graduate degree in administration.

David H. Lund, II, Appleton, WI, has been a police officer in Appleton since 1990. He married Mary Turcott in 1992 and they have one daughter, Carissa, born in 1995.

Marcia Muncy, Celebration, FL, is teaching a multi-age K-2 class in Disney's new town of Celebration, for the School District of Osceola.

1991

Mona Austin, Minneapolis, MN, traveled through Europe and Australia after graduation. She is currently working as a legal secretary in a Bloomington law firm.

Ted Johnson recently received the position of field director for the State of Minnesota Clinton/ Gore Reelection Campaign. He graduated from UMD with a degree in political science.

Gerard Kulzer, Willmar, MN, is teaching art at Litchfield High School and taking classes at Willmar Technical College in their illustration program. His solo art exhibit, "Presence,"

Christy Montour-Larson, Rochester, MN, recently completed her masters of fine art in directing and is now the artistic/executive director at the Rochester Civic Theater.

Margaret Kuske Munson, Chaska, MN, is the program director at the Carver County Jail in Chaska.

Julie Jensen Narverud, Albert Lea, MN, is working at South Central Technical College in Albert Lea as the human rights and affirmative action officer. She is married with a one-year-old daughter.

Lisa Noponen, Tulsa, OK, is a sales representative for 3M, covering Oklahoma and Texas. She misses UMD hockey and snow!

Mark Twombly, St. Paul, MN, is a sales manager for Gopher State Amusements. They provide entertainment for county fairs and carnivals in the upper midwest.

Eric Wangensteen, Santa Barbara, CA, is a pilot for Skywest Airlines. He continues his jazz music interest by playing trumpet in the Los Angeles area.

1992

Stephanie Alto, Virginia, IL, received her masters degree from Southern Illinois University in 1993. She currently works for FEMA as a food mitigation specialist in Springfield, IL.

Todd T. Conrad, Arcadia, CA, is a senior accountant at Honeywell.

Tom Grahek was recently promoted to the position of senior financial management analyst at USDA.

Neil Heirecke, Shoreview, MN, teaches at Spring Lake Park Alternative High School.

Darren Horstmeier, Cheyenne, WY, is employed by the U.S. Air Force as the community planner at Francis E. Warren AFB in Cheyenne.

Todd A. Mazzitelli, Denver, CO, is working as a manufacturer's representative at Electronic Component Systems, selling interconnection and packaging products in the electronics industry. He was recently promoted to vice president of sales.

Troy Bonkowske, Eden Prairie, MN, married Anne Cheeley Bonkowske in 1994 and is currently attending graduate school at Mankato State University, seeking a degree in public administra-tion/urban and regional studies.

Marcelle L. Caturia, Bloomington, MN, is working as an environmental specialist at PEER, Inc., in Edina and still interested in international studies and travel.

Rachel Heinrich, Faribault, MN, is now children's program supervisor at the Buckham Memorial Library in Faribault.

Stuart M. Mattfield, Norfolk, VA, was recently designated a naval aviator and presented with the coveted "Wings of Gold," which marked the culmination of months of flight training with Flying Training Squadron, Randolph Air Force Base, San Antonio, TX.

Mark Steinbrecher, Memphis, TN, is currently a third-year student at the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis. He will obtain his O.D. in June of 1997.

Michelle M. Stoltman, Shorewood, MN, is working as a senior editorial assistant for American How-To Magazine, a publication of North American Outdoor Group, Inc., in Minnetonka.

Peter T. Tonsager,Mankato, MN, is account executive/technical support for Phoenix Biocomposites, environmentally friendly surface products made of recycled newspaper and soy flour.

Karen Van Elsen, Green Bay, WI, recently married and is working as weather anchor and health reporter at WFRV-TV 5 in Green Bay. She's also going back to school for a meteorology degree from Mississippi State University.

Sheila Tezak passed away in August, 1996. While attending UMD, she interned in the public defender's office and was a member of Gamma Gamma Sigma and Delta sororities.

Matthew Weiland and Heather Chreno Weiland, Mankato, MN, were married in August, 1995. They are currently residing in Mankato where Matt is attending graduate school for urban planning at Mankato State University. Heather is employed at the new Federal Correctional Institution - FCI, Waseca, MN.
