St. Louis River Eco-Kayak Tours
Discover the unique natural and cultural history of
the Lower St. Louis River, the United States’ largest
Lake Superior tributary. Choose from two different
beginner level tours: The Historic Fond du Lac
Riverfront and Birding Tour or the Duluth Waterfront
Tour. Use your choice of sea kayak and enjoy access
to a stand-up paddleboard during the tour. We’ll
begin with a basic introduction and incorporate on
water instruction throughout the three to six mile
tour. We will paddle rain or shine and the weather
conditions of the day will determine the degree of
difficulty. Children aged six and above are welcome
to participate in a tandem kayak with an adult.
Meet at the Aquatic Center 1-5pm.

Basic Sea Kayak Strokes and Rescues
Level 1 ACA Pro School Course, 1-Day Format
Learn the basics in a day filled with wet exits, paddle
strokes, braces, solo and assisted rescues. Our ACA
certified instructors will teach you the paddling
strokes and rescues most common to sea kayaking.
Using the skills learned in this class, you will be able
to safely guide your kayak to the places you love to
explore. Prepare for a rigorous day of kayaking.
Be ready to get wet, work hard and have fun!
Meet at the Aquatic Center 9am-5pm.

Basic Sea Kayak Strokes and Rescues
Level 1 ACA Pro School Course, 2-Day Format
This two-day course is designed to provide
beginners with a safe and fun introduction to
the sport of sea kayaking at a more relaxed pace
than our one-day course. Day One: Learn kayak
nomenclature, wet exit, forward touring and power
stroke, forward and reverse sweep stroke, sculling
and in water recovery draw strokes along with risk
management strategies for paddling in mixed boat
traffic. Day Two: Paddle under the Ariel Lift Bridge to
Lake Superior thru the ship canal to master the wet
exit and practice solo and assisted rescues.
Meet at the Aquatic Center 9am-3pm.

Safety and Rescue Course
This course, offered at the UMD pool, will introduce
you to equipment, trip planning, wet exit, basic
strokes, and deep-water rescues. It is designed to
provide information that will help you decide what
conditions best suit your paddling ability.
Be prepared to paddle and get wet!
Fridays from 5-9pm by appointment $50

Pool Based Kayak Bracing & Rolling Level 2
Learn the best method of kayak self-rescue. We will
lay the foundation of the roll through drills that
develop your hip snap and overall comfort in a
kayak. Bring your own kayak or use one of ours.

Wild Woman! Sea Kayak & Climb Level 1
Lake Superior’s Stunning Waves and Cliffs
Enjoy a fun day of sea kayaking and rock climbing with other
active women in a beautiful, natural setting on the North
Shore of Lake Superior. We’ll meet at Silver Cliff, north of Two Harbors and spend the morning climbing on gently-angled sea cliffs
overlooking Lake Superior. After a lakeside picnic
lunch, we’ll paddle sea kayaks to explore the rugged
landscape near Two Harbors. Meets 9am-5pm.

Sea Kayak and Climb Combo Day Level 1
Sea Kayaking and Climbing in Duluth. Plan a full day of fun and exploration on Lake Superior and on the cliffs near Duluth. We’ll spend
the morning rock climbing amid the friendly climbs in the forests of Ely’s Peak followed by a waterfront picnic lunch. The afternoon will be spent sea kayaking the Duluth Waterfront. Meets 9am-5pm.

Adventure Sport - Beach Recreation Day - Level 1
Learn to Stand-Up PaddleBoard (SUP), Pilot an Inflatable or Foil
Kite and Kayak with a V-Sail! All of these sports are introduced
during a one-day outing on the secluded end of Park Point. The
instruction emphasis is on kiting and V-Sailing when it’s windy or
paddling and board skills when it’s calm. It’s a FUN day that can
lead to continued excitement by prorgressing into SUP touring,
surfing or snow kiting.

Stand-Up Paddleboarding Introduction - Level 1
This rapidly growing paddling/ surfing hybrid adventure sport
is a thrilling full body workout and a great way to explore our
lakes and rivers. Spend a day on flatwater and deep river rapids
with standing waves to develop your stance options, balance,
stroke techniques, board trim, river maneuvers and river wave
surfing skills.
Meet at the Outpost 9am-4pm.

Additional stand-up paddle board instruction is offered along the
Lake Superior Shoreline on calm and big surf days. Call to arrange

Lake Superior Stand-Up Paddleboard (SUP) & Kayak Adventure Tour - Level 2
Explore the Split Rock Lighthouse State Park shoreline, visit the
lighthouse and a Lake Superior Water Trail kayak campsite. This
day-tour is designed to refine your skills as we travel along
a challenging route. Learn about trip planning, equipment,
paddling efficiency, group management and take in some
spectacular scenery. We will compare the attributes of the SUP
with the kayak in calm conditions or in wind and waves as we adapt
to whatever the day brings.
Meet at the Aquatic Center, 8am-6pm.

All courses have skill level designations to help you choose a level that meets your needs. If you have prior paddling experience, refer to the skill level definitions to get an idea of where to start.

Sea Kayak Skill Levels
Intro Level
Tours are designed for people who what to "try out" sea kayaking in a safe learning environment. You will learn basic paddling strokes, boat maneuvering skills and what to do in the event of an accidental capsize.
Level 1
Courses are designed to prepare paddlers to comfortably paddle in protected flatwater environments with conditions up to one-foot seas, ten-knot winds and be no more than 1/2 mile from shore. No previous
experience required.
Level 2
Courses are designed to prepare paddlers to safely paddle in open water environments with conditions up to three-foot seas, twenty-knot winds and be no more than one mile from shore. Level 1 course or equivalent
experience/skill level recommended.  Paddlers should be in good physical condition, willing to paddle hard, swim and have fun.
