Pool Based Kayak Bracing & Rolling
Level 2 ACA Pro School Course
Learn the best method of kayak self-rescue. In this 4-hour
session we will lay the foundation of the roll through drills that
develop your hip snap and overall comfort in a kayak. Bring
your own kayak or use one of ours.

Class I-II Whitewater Kayak River Running
Level 1 ACA Pro School Course. Building a solid foundation.
This three day intensive is for those who have never paddled
a kayak before or wish to measure their understanding of
the basics. You will learn about equipment design, stroke
techniques, rescues, maneuvering skills, kayak rolling, as well
as moving water safety and river hydrology. We will start
with learning strokes on flatwater, progress to moving water
maneuvers and combine it all during a whitewater river running
experience on day three.

Whitewater Kayak River Tune-Up
Level 2 ACA Pro School Course
Spend a day on Class I-II whitewater polishing your river maneuvers. The tune-up is for paddlers who want more instructor guidance after a Level 1
course or want to tune-up their river reading, ferries, eddy turns, peel outs, and rolls before taking Level 3 courses. It is also a great way to demo a boat. Call for kayak model availability.

Class I-II River Tripping Tandem &
Solo Whitewater Open Canoe Course

Level 1 ACA Pro School Course
Take your Boundary Waters tripping to a new level.
Learn the skills it takes to travel down a whitewater
river in royalex tripping canoes. This two-day
intensive course is for those who have never
paddled a canoe before or have paddled flatwater
only. Have fun learning about equipment design,
stroke technique, maneuvering, river hazards and
rescues. This course will teach you river tripping
techniques used to paddle a loaded canoes down
the river. Tripping canoes are outfitted with thigh
straps and flotation bags to enhance your safety and
learning on flatwater through Class II whitewater.

Class II-III Whitewater Tandem and Solo Canoe Playboating
Moving towards efficient communication and river play.
Level 2 ACA Pro School Course
Paddlers ready for this course feel comfortable in Class II
whitewater and have the desire to polish eddy turns, peel outs
and ferries on the river. We will review stroke basics on
moving water then move into Class II and III whitewater.
Surfing waves, playing holes, river reading, choosing a line
and safety while running rapids will be covered in depth.
Day trip planning and river rescues are also covered.
High performance whitewater canoe designs and outfitting
will be used to accelerate your learningand fun. Want to do
your own thing? Go solo! Canoeists looking for a new challenge
will learn stroke variations for solo paddling, maintaining for-
ward speed, bracing, river maneuvering, rescues, and river play
skills like surfing on small waves or holes.

Class II-III Whitewater Kayak River Running
Level 3 ACA Pro School Course
Learn to paddle a challenging river safely and efficiently. We
will teach you how to stop following someone else and start
leading the way by focusing on moving from point A to point
Bas safely and efficiently as possible.
We will cover basic and advanced stroke technique, river read-
ing from land and kayak, choosing and staying on a line
through a rapid, group dynamics and how to provide safety
backup for fellow kayakers. As time and water levels allow, we
will also work on basic play techniques.

Rodeo Freestyle Whitewater Kayak Playboating
Levels 3 & 4 ACA Pro School Course
Learn to play the river.
In this course, we will focus on the skills that allow you to
stay on a surfing wave longer, do sharp cutbacks, back surf
and stern squirt. Then it is onto a friendly hole to work
outside surfing, spinning, enders, pirouettes and cartwheel
basics using our patented cartwheel teaching tool. This
course will begin on flatwater, fine tuning the strokes and
stroke combinations that are needed to play the features. We
will then progress into Class II-III
whitewater play features. Learn to identify friendly play
features and how to use them. Wewill use rodeo freestyle
kayaks to allow the best learning curve for these moves.

Adventure Sport - Beach Recreation Day - Level 1
Learn to Stand-Up PaddleBoard (SUP), Pilot an Inflatable or Foil
Kite and Kayak with a V-Sail! All of these sports are introduced
during a one-day outing on the secluded end of Park Point. The
instruction emphasis is on kiting and V-Sailing when it’s windy or
paddling and board skills when it’s calm. It’s a FUN day that can
lead to continued excitement by prorgressing into SUP touring,
surfing or snow kiting.

Stand-Up Paddleboarding Introduction - Level 1
This rapidly growing paddling/ surfing hybrid adventure sport
is a thrilling full body workout and a great way to explore our
lakes and rivers. Spend a day on flatwater and deep river rapids
with standing waves to develop your stance options, balance,
stroke techniques, board trim, river maneuvers and river wave
surfing skills.

Lake Superior Stand-Up Paddleboard (SUP) & Kayak Adventure Tour - Level 2
Explore the Split Rock Lighthouse State Park shoreline, visit the
lighthouse and a Lake Superior Water Trail kayak campsite. This
day-tour is designed to refine your skills as we travel along
a challenging route. Learn about trip planning, equipment,
paddling efficiency, group management and take in some
spectacular scenery. We will compare the attributes of the SUP
with the kayak in calm conditions or in wind and waves as we adapt
to whatever the day brings.

Thirteenth Annual St. Louis River Whitewater
Rendezvous Slalom & Sprint Races July 24-26

Whitewater slalom and sprint racing action with free
race clinics, music, food and FUN for paddlers of all
skill levels.
July 24 Noon-8pm Open practice on the slalom
race course. 3-7pm Paddler registration open at the
Outpost
July 25 9am-Noon Paddler registration at the
Outpost. Noon-2pm Slalom Race Clinic (free for
registered racers). 9am-4pm Open practice on
the slalom course. 4-6pm Small group whitewater
kayak exploration of the lower run for registered
Rendezvous participants who want to scope out the
river and portage the biggest drops
July 26 9am-11am Slalom race runs. 11amnoon
Lunch. Noon-2pm Slalom race runs. 2-3pm
Whitewater sprint or stand-up paddleboard race
runs. 4pm Slalom awards and prize drawings at the
Outpost.

RSOP courses are staffed by experienced, motivated and enthusiastic instructors, dedicated to teaching paddlers to become skillful and self-sufficient. All courses blend paddling sk ill development, risk management training and technical information to help you establish the judgement needed to have a fun and safe day on the water. All courses have skill level designations to help you choose a level that meets your needs.

Whitewater Kayaking Skill Levels
Level 1 No experience is necessary. A willingness to get wet is required. Learn basic strokes, bracing techniques and boat maneuvering skills.
Level 2 Must have completed a Level 1 course or equivalent. Must be able to demonstrate basic knowledge of strokes, braces, ferries, peel outs, eddy turns and self-rescue on Class I whitewater.
Level 3 Must have Level 2 skills. Must be able to perform ferries, peel outs, and eddy turns. Must be comfortable with self-rescue (rolling or swimming) in Class II-III whitewater.
Level 4 Must have Level 3 skills. Must be proficient
with ferries, peel outs, and eddy turns in Class II-III whitewater. Must have a proficient flatwater roll.

2009 Thomson Dam Whitewater Releases:
Enjoy Class II-V paddling below Thomson Dam.
Minimum flow is always at 350 cfs.
