Volunteer With the Outdoor Program!
Ever wondered what it feels like to lead a group along wooded
trails under the moonlight? Or have you wanted to share
your love of kayaking, trail running or your knack for crafts
with others? Then be a part of the Outdoor Program staff and
develop the skills to become a leader in education through participation
in a fun environment. Meetings focus on developing
skills, having fun, exploring, and sometimes free food! Show up
and you can be involved! Meeting topics are:

Sailing Duluth
We will be working with the Duluth-Superior Sailing Association
learning about the components of sailing in the Duluth-
Superior Harbor. You will get an opportunity at the helm of a
sailboat, getting a feel of the wind on the sails. We will cover
sailing terminology, raising and lowering sails, how to operate
the sails, and how to steer the boat.

Wild Mushroom Hike
He’s back and looking for mushrooms. Join mushroom expert
Mike McCall and learn about mushrooms and their identification.
Fall is the time to discover a wide variety of mushrooms,
including those that are edible. In this comprehensive class,
we will practice identification and harvesting techniques. Mike
has been teaching about mushrooms forever, is incredibly
knowledgeable, and is quite the character. Bring your collecting
basket, knife, field guide (if you have one) and dress for the
weather.

Fishing The Duluth Area
If you are an angler looking for a place to go and catch some
fish, here is your chance to find out. John Lindgren with the
D.N.R. Fisheries is the man in the know and he will tell area
places to shore fish and boat fish!

Bike Maintenance Clinic FREE!
Is your bike in need of some love but you are just not sure
where to start? Join us for an evening of basic and intermediate
bike maintenance here at UMD with members of the Bike Cave
Collective. They will teach basic maintenance such as adjusting
brakes and derailleurs, lubricating the chain, and more.

Disc Golf Tournament
Test your disc golf skills against other disc golfers in a “scramble”
style tournament on the UMD Disc Golf Course. Teams of
2 play 2 rounds in a “foursome”. The lowest score is the winner
(if there is a tie, we’ll do a “sudden death” playoff). We will also
have a “longest throw” and “closest to pin” competition. Prizes
for the winners. Tons of fun!

Trail Running for Fun and Fitness Series
Did you know Duluth has more incredible trail systems than
you can shake a running shoe at? Join us each week as we
explore new trails on foot while being invigorated by Duluth’s
natural landscape of waterfalls, lush forests, and amazing views.
Whether you want to challenge your current training pace, or
simply want some group motivation to help you get in shape,
come run with us. Each run will be accompanied by pre- and
post-run stretches.

Cooking for the Trail
Are you tired of the same old boring meals every time you
go camping? Looking for more ideas on what to cook? This
workshop will give you what you are looking for when it comes
to not only planning your menu but cooking your meals too.
Come and learn about what foods are good for the trail, what
goes into a good menu, cook a few meals and take home a few
new recipes.

Boggin’ With Brian
Have you ever explored a bog? Come hike with Brian in a local
bog and learn how a bog is like a jar of pickles and other amazing
natural history facts about bogs. Bogs have preserved human
bodies and are rich with unique life, such as insect eating
plants. Come explore with us!

Lumber Jill Competition
It takes a strong man to fetch two buckets of water from the
pond. It takes a stronger man to split a log into four. But, only
the strongest man can do this with his furry legs protruding
from his big sister’s yellow sun dress. Don’t get me wrong ladies
you are welcome too, that is if you can dig out your flannel,
logger pants, and suspenders. Gather your team of 4 hardcore
outdoor masters to compete in this 5 event skills challenge.
Events include: Tandem log sawing, log splitting, yolk racing,
pancake eating, and campfire building. Teams will be categorized
into men, women, and co-eds. Prizes will be awarded to
the first place team in each category and the best dressed male
and female participants.

Catt’in the Louie
Catfish hunter isn’t just in the movies kids, and we know where
to find him. Join us as we head to a local hotspot in search
of catfish. Around a campfire we will enjoy brats, hot drinks,
and learn a bit about fishing conservation and invasive species.

Attention hunters! Are you new to Duluth, or looking for a

County Land Department, who will share possibilities for area

Full Moon Hike
A full moon is a beautiful and mystifying phenomena. Join us
for a hike thru Bagley Nature area under the full moon. We’ll
learn some fun facts about the moon, go for a hike under its
eerie glow, then finish up atop Rock Hill for an evening treat.

Dehydrating Your Own Camp Meals and Snacks
Commercially dried camping meals are frequently barely edible
(in addition to being super-high in sodium and chemical
preservatives). In this hands-on session, you’ll learn the basics
of dehydrating as well as try drying your own meals and tasty
snacks. Whether you’re planning a camping trip or just need
some snacks for your next road trip, this class will get you
started and you’ll have a treat to take home at the end.

Buckthorn Pull: Removing Exotic Species
Buckthorn is an invasive species that is choking out the native
species of the area. We will be working to eradicate this
nuisance species through non-toxic, environmentally friendly
methods. We need your help to rid Bagley Nature Center of
Buckthorn by pulling it out of the ground so it doesn’t come
back. It will be a morning of fun and hard work and you will be
helping the forest stay healthy

Geocaching
Geocaching is a great way to get outside and have an awesome
geography treasure hunt. It helps to improve your navigational
skills all while having fun. We will go over the basics of using
GPS units and then head off to a great cache in Bagley. Bring
some fun trinkets to leave and take some new ones home.

Apple Cidering: The Old Fashioned Way
Its fall again and apples are ripe for the picking. Come learn
about apples while making homemade apple cider using a handcrank
cider press. We will incorporate the history of cider and
cider making while you take a turn at the press and learn how
to do it yourself. Bring a mug for a taste test!

Superior Hiking Trail Day Hike
Come spend a day hiking one of the most scenic stretches of the
Superior Hiking trail. We will traverse six miles plus of 100%
genuine north woods beauty only a hop, skip and jump away
from our own backyards. We will hike from Gooseberry State
Park to Split Rock State Park and have the option of
hiking a few extra miles if weather and morale permits.

Fall Walleye Fishing
Come join us for an exciting day of walleye fishing on one of
the Nation’s top walleye fisheries, all while paddling through
the beautiful St. Louis River valley. If you’ve ever wanted to
get to know the St. Louis River for walleye fishing, now is your
chance. You will be fishing out of canoes, so basic canoeing
experience is recommended.

Wildlife Rehabilitation
Come and join local expert Peggy Farr for an informative session
on wildlife rehabilitation. In this session you will learn
about how wildlife rehab is done in the area, when wildlife rehab
is needed and what to do if you think an animal is in need,
as well as get your questions answered.

Northshore Steelhead Fishing
Come and join expert instructors from the Lake Superior Steelhead
Association for an exploration of steelhead fishing along
the North Shore of Lake Superior. We will learn the story of
steelhead, where to fish, fish biology, when to catch steelhead,
gear, and techniques for success. Instructors for this course
have extensive experience and knowledge about fishing the
North Shore.

Build Your Own Snowshoes!
Have you ever wanted to make your own snowshoes? Learn how
to weave a pair of Ojibwa style, wooden snowshoes. The kit includes
a frame that is bent, sanded, and ready to go along with
pre-cut lacing. This program is a great low-cost way to build
your own snowshoes and wear them with pride or give as a gift.
Construction of snowshoes will take place on two evenings, as it
takes a while to get these things made!

We need your help. Each winter a group of people sit down and
sew items such as hats, scarves and mittens to help keep local
children stay warm. Many area families are not able to purchase
the items necessary to keep their children warm. We are seeking

Explore the world of mosaic art. We will manipulate glass to
create mosaic candle holders, as well as get an introduction to
the many different techniques and materials used with this art
