Volunteer With the Outdoor Program!
Ever wondered what it would be like to lead a group along a
moonlite wooded trail? Or are you interested in sharing your
love of kayaking, trail running, or your skill for crafts with
others? If so, become a part of the Outdoor Program staff and
develop the skills to become a leader in education through participation
in a fun environment. Meetings include skill development,
fun, exploration and yummy treats. Join us!

Sailing Duluth
We will be working with the Duluth Superior Sailing Association
learning about the components of sailing while trying it
out in the Duluth-Superior Harbor. You will have an opportunity
at the helm of a sailboat, getting a feel of the wind on the
sails. We will cover terminology, steering, raising, lowering and
operating sails.

Wild Mushroom Hike
He’s Back! Join mushroom expert Mike McCall and learn about
mushrooms and identification in the northland. Fall is the time
to discover edible woodland mushrooms. In this comprehensive
class where we will practice identification and harvesting techniques.
Mike has been teaching about mushrooms forever, is
incredibly knowledgeable, and quite a fun character. Bring your
collecting basket, knife, and dress for the weather.

Edible Foods
Have you ever been wandering through the woods and gotten
a little hungry, but didn’t have a snack? Join us for a fall edible
food hike in Bagley Nature Area. Learn how to identify, harvest
and prepare wild edibles.

Tuesday Trail Running Series
Did you know Duluth has more incredible trail systems than
you can shake a running shoe at? Join us each week as we
explore new trails on foot while being invigorated by Duluth’s
natural landscape of waterfalls, lush forests, and amazing views.
Whether you want to challenge your current training pace, or
simply want some group motivation to help you get in shape,
come run with us. Each run will be accompanied by pre- and
post-run stretches.

Training and Nutrition for Outdoor Sports
From endurance sports to weight lifting, paddling to climbing, and
everything in betweencome and learn training and nutrition tips and
tricks to better prepare for and recover from outdoor sports and competitions. We’ll provide information on healthy snacks, drinks
training techniques and pointers on choosing the best training areas around Duluth.

Catt’in the Louie
Catfish hunter isn’t just in the movies kids, and we know where
to find him. Join us as we head to a local hotspot in search
of jumbo catfish. Around a campfire we will enjoy brats, hot
drinks, and learn a bit about fishing conservation and invasive
species. Everyone is welcome.

Bog Walk
How is a bog like a jar of pickles? Explore a local bog and learn
how, and other amazing natural history facts about bogs. Bogs
have preserved human bodies and are rich with unique life,
such as insect eating plants.

Hunt The Duluth Area
Attention hunters! Are you new to Duluth, or looking for a new piece
of public land to hunt? If you are, here is a presentation for you. This
program will feature Area Wildlife Manager, Rich Staffon, of the
Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. He will share hunting
opportunities on area public lands.

Backpack the Porcupine Mountains, MI
There are mountains around here? Yes, and they are beautiful!
In the Upper Peninsula of Michigan are the secluded Porcupine
Mountains, right along Lake Superior. Enjoy fall colors at their
finest! Marvel at the colors by day and the starlit sky by night.
We will help you develop backpacking skills while we discover
the “Porkies” fall forest beauty. New friends and adventure for
everyone who comes along. No experience is necessary.

Apple Cidering
It’s fall and apples are ripe for the picking. Learn how to make homemade
apple cider using a vintage hand-crank press. Take a turn at the
press and bring a mug for a taste test!

Lumber Jill
It takes a strong man to fetch two buckets of water from the pond. It
takes a stronger man to throw an axe into a bulls-eye from 20 feet
away. But, only the strongest man can do this with his furry legs
protruding from his big sister’s yellow sun dress. Don’t get me wrong
ladies you are welcome too, that is if you can dig out your flannel, logger
pants, and suspenders. Gather your team of 4 hardcore outdoor
masters to compete in this 5 event skills challenge. Events include:
tandem log sawing, axe throwing, yolk racing, pancake eating, and
campfire building. Teams will be categorized into men, women, and
co-eds. Prizes will be awarded to the first place team in each category
and the best dressed male and female participants.

Buckthorn Pull: Removing Exotic Species
Buckthorn is an invasive species that is choking out the native species
of the area. We will be working to eradicate this nuisance species
through non-toxic, environmentally friendly methods. We need your
help to rid Bagley Nature area of buckthorn by pulling it out of the
ground so it doesn’t come back. It will be an afternoon of fun and hard
work and you will be helping the forest stay healthy

Superior Hiking Trail Day Hike
Spend a day hiking one of the most scenic stretches of the
Superior Hiking Trail. We will be traversing six miles plus of
100% genuine north woods beauty only a hop, skip and jump
away from UMD’s backyard. We will hike from Gooseberry Falls
State Park to Split Rock Lighthouse State Park with the option
of hiking a few extra miles if weather and energy permits.

Late Night Hike
Put your nerves to the test with a late night hike with no
moonlight. While hiking through a nearby nature area we will
observe stars and constellations, and listen for sounds of the
night. An enjoyable opportunity to tune into nature at night.

Knots For Knuckle Heads
A Taut what Line? You have heard the names and watched
others tie them. Now here’s your chance to learn them
yourself. Our instructors will teach you how and when to use a
square knot, bowline, clove, taut line, trucker’s hitch and more.
These knots will help you with everything from securing a boat
to tightening a tarp. We’ll also include a few crazy yet functional
new knots.

Join us for an exciting day of walleye fishing on one of the
nation’s top walleye fisheries, the beautiful St. Louis River
Valley. Enjoy the day trolling local hotspots from a canoe.

The Ins-and-Outs of Buying Outdoor Gear
New, used, home-made, online, in stores, from gear swaps or
garage sales… there are so many variables when shopping for
outdoor gear. We’ll tell you the places to find the best gear for
your money, and give you tips on what types of gear to buy or
rent for various outdoor activities. We’ll provide hand-outs and
some gear to use as examples.

50 Years of Wolf/Moose Study on Isle Royale
Join researchers Dr. Rolf Peterson and Dr. John Vucetich as
they present the stories of wolf/moose research on Isle Royale
over the past 50 years. An amazing story that gives tremendous
insight to the natural history of wolves and moose.
